Keep him awake and remove his nap??
« on: August 14, 2008, 21:42:52 pm »
My ds is now 2 and he use to nap between 1 and 3pm, but lately he only naps at like 4 or 5pm, which means he ends up not being tired at bedtime and stays awake like 1 hour before falling asleep! Somedays he only ends up falling asleep at 10pm!! Those days he usually just comes to our bed coz its too late for me to be sitting up with him still he's asleep. He does not fall asleep by himself so I need to be with him. He usually gets up in the nites anyway and comes to our bed if he does sleep in his own bed. I use to get up and take him to bed but now with a dd of 3mths its just too tiring. He gets grumpy at like 6 or 7pm if he has not napped and sometimes cant stay awake. But do I rather keep him awake and then let him go to bed early, at like 7:30pm. He use to go to bed at 8:30 or 9pm.Its just so time consuming in the nites now and I spend half the nite trying to get him to go to sleep. He just wont settle and keeps fidgiting and rolling around!! ???

what time does he get up in the morning?

You could try dropping the nap, but offering some quiet activity instead.  Then try for in bed by 12 hours after wakeup. (or better yet, try for asleep by then).

My DD just dropped her nap, and it moved her fall asleep time from about 9pm to 6:30/7pm.

Watch for overtiredness, though, and be prepared to offer the nap if it seems needed (ie on any given day, just not every day).

He usually gets up at 8 or 8:30pm. He use to get up earlier, at about 6 or 7am when he use to sleep in his own room. But now when sleeping with us he wakes later. He has done it once, where he hasnt napped all day, fell asleep on the sofa at 7pm and woke at 8pm and I put him to bed and he slept through coz he was soo pooped.

If he will happily go to bed at 7/7:30 and keep those wakeup times, then go for that.  Otherwise aim for asleep 12 hours after wakeup.

My DD when I added nap and night sleep together was only getting 10.5-11.5 per day.  She is now wanting to go to bed quite early, and as yet wakeup time in the AM is unaffected, so she seems to be actually getting more sleep this way!

We are in the same boat.  DD has not taken a nap in three days.  I am wondering if this is the end of naps.  She is still in the crib and I am putting her down for quiet time even if she does not sleep.  It gives me a few minutes to get things done around the house.
