When did you stop waking your lo in the mornings?
« on: August 24, 2008, 20:28:56 pm »
So, I was just wondering really......I started EASY when Josh was 3 weeks old. I didn't start waking him at 7am until around 4 or 5 months (that extra sleep in the mornings makes all the difference when they've been up in the night as he didn't sttn until 4.5 months, plus before that he usually woke on his own anyway).

That said, more often that not he would wake up himself either between 6:30 & 7, or more commonly at 7am on the dot or just after. This past few months, he has been still asleep at 7am on a regular basis, and I HATE waking him. However, on 2 naps its important that I do this, otherwise naps etc are too late in the day, kwim?

He is a few days off 11 months now. We are currently in the midst of the 2-1 nap transition  :-X ...some days we are only having one long nap over lunchtime and an early bedtime, others one long nap and a quick 10-20 min catnap in the late arvo.

I went out last night and didn't get home until late so was so tired this morning that I switched my alarm off when it went off at 7am, and didn't wake until 7:30. Josh woke up a few mins later. At first I thought uh oh the day is messed up already then I thought hang on, it isn't really because he's only REALLY having one nap now, so its less of a problem...does that make sense?

Anyway, I will try not to make this an essay!! The question is, when did you stop waking your lo and just letting them sleep until they woke? I still want him to have a 7pm bedtime...I'm worried that if I let him sleep too late, and he still goes to bed at 7pm I am going to get ew's because he's had enough sleep.... :-\ What's everyone elses experience?

Humour me  :P ::)

I didn't vote because there wasn't an option that fit me.  :)  For a long time DS woke me at ugly hours like 5:45 or 6:00.  Then around 17 months he started sleeping later in the morning and gradually slept later and later until it was 8:00/8:30 in the morning.  At the same time his bedtime did shift later--it was staying light a lot later at night as this was happening.

Then we reached a point around maybe 20 months that his long night sleep started interfering with his napping (ie he's sleep 12 hours at night and refuse to nap), so since then we have to wake him every morning to ensure that he naps.  He's now 32 months.

When ds was really fighting naps around 9 months I woke him for a few week but I've pretty much let him wake when he wants - the latest its ever been is 8 - we all overslept that day!

I say go with the flow!  I had too many 5am wake ups and I'm still catching up on my sleep 14 months later!!!

Rarely!!  If he ever did or does sleep past 7.30 I get a bit worried and may wake him up.

But I did find if he slept late it didn't muck up the routine too much.  Just pushed the naps back a bit and made the pm nap a little shorter!

I have often intended to wake my kids to help solidify a routine.  But could never ever bring myself to disturb the peace and quiet, so I usually end up boiling the jug and not waiting for them to wake at all ;) LOL

Wait...there are actually moms that have to wake their kids???   :o :o  Never knew that.   ;)  DH and I celebrate when the boys sleep until 6:15!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  Enjoy your little sleeper!  I'm so jealous!

I always used to wake ds to keep naps on track but I found that once he got to 1 nap he could cope with a 12.5/13hr night and just nap a bit later and I would wake him a bit earlier from nap to keep 7pm bedtime. I think when they are on 1 nap they (at least my ds) can even out their sleep so the extra he has on the night he just drops a bit off his nap.

The only reason I am up before my kids, and letting them sleep is because it is ME who is the super early riser :P
