Losing weight while BF--am I endangering my supply?
« on: August 31, 2008, 04:43:53 am »
I have lost about 23 pounds in the last 2 months.  I still have at least 25 pounds that I need to lose to be at a healthy weight.

My DD is 3 months old and I just have this niggling worry that I'm losing weight too quickly and may be jeopardizing my supply--even though there's no indication of that.

I'm not doing any sort of crazy diet.  I'm not counting calories or grams of anything.  I'm just eating (mostly ;)) nutrient-dense food (fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean protein) only when I'm hungry and stopping at satisfication (lots of focus on honoring hunger/satisfaction signals).  I am also off dairy and soy because DD is intolerant.  I'm sure that my not eating cheese and ice cream as helped with the weight loss.  I was exercising regularly (2 mile brisk walk, pilates and hand weights), but then I got a stress fracture, so no more walking--just pilates and hand weights.

Does this all sound okay?  I'm a worrier.  I love that I'm losing weight.  I don't want to start eating when I'm not hungry, which I'd have to do to slow the weightloss.  Yet, I don't want to do anything to mess up breastfeeding.

Bethany, your diet sounds sensible. If you start noticing your supply dipping I'd stick in a couple healthy snacks. A hand full of nuts for example will keep you going for a very long time and give your body that extra fat it needs.

Enjoy the bf-ing advantage. I wish I did it as healthily as you, but am still losing weight whilst pigging out on cake and chocolate. The time I noticed I needed to watch out was as dd1 got to 11 mo or so and the amount of milk she drank started to reduce.

Well done, and good luck!
Katie

Unfortunately, DD is intolerant of dairy.  I've been trying to add avacado to my diet for some healthy fat.  :)
