is there such a thing as a nap that's too long?
« on: September 02, 2008, 18:25:00 pm »
I took my 9 week old out to lunch with a friend during his nap hour today and he fell asleep fine, but it's 2:20pm and he's been asleep since 11am.  Is there such a thing as a nap that's too long?  Should I have woken him up at the 1.5 or 2 hour mark?

Thank you!!

hmm...when they have multiple naps in a day, a good plan is to wake around 2hrs.

they say, "a 3hr nap" can signal nightime....so i've never really ever left for that long!  only once they get to one nap, might it be ok.

For me, it all depends on what else has been going on.  If DS had a cold, a short nap, less sleep at night, etc.  then i let him sleep away.  If however, it's nearing night time and you are trying to establish a routine that happens at XX time every night, then I'd wake him at the 2 hr mark -- but move bedtime slightly earlier to account for the extra tiredness.  Does that make sense?

Just to reiterate what the other ladies have said, with a LO that young, you just need to be careful they aren't switching day and night.  My understanding is that, during the day, you should wake LOs that young every three hours during the day to eat to avoid that day/night switch.  Their internal clocks need to be taught that nighttime is the time for long sleeps, not day time.

I have the same issue - my 3.5 mo is on EASY - she just started doing 4hr EASY, but not because she is awake a lot, but because she sleeps for 2.5-3 hr 3 times a day! and then she sleeps through the night (waking up once or twice because she is losing her paci - that's another issue!). I don't know if she is waking up and playing at night - she sleeps in a different room... So I was also wondering if I should just wake her up after 2 hr nap? I had to do it a couple of times and she seemed pretty sleepy and cranky after that and had shorter A time...

at that age they need their sleep so i wouldn't be too concerned with a long nap.  but i would wake them to eat at the 3 hour mark since last feed.  you want him to take in as many calories during the day so he won't be up all night wanting to eat.

agree with waking to not switch day and night too.

Something else to add....

Is he sleeping for more than 2 hours regularly or just once or twice a week?

If it's a common thing, maybe then I would be more religious with not letting him go past 3 hrs since last feed (though I never had a day/night mix-up with DS after 3 hr naps here & there)

If it's only happening once a week, then I would be okay with letting him sleep until 4 hrs after feed.  I would just be weary of it happening more than once a day or several times over a short period.

HTH.

Thank you all for the advice!  Fortunately it doens't happen very often.  So far the 3 times it's happened is when we've been out and he's still asleep in the carseat... I haven't seen it happen in the crib yet.  His night-times are good, asleep from 8pm-ish to 6am-ish and then back for another nap until 8 or 9am.  *fingers crossed that it continues*  =)
