Reaction or flu? Day 6 of new food
« on: September 05, 2008, 22:09:53 pm »
We have been slowly introducing solids to my dd over the last month and half or so.
She was given rice and oatmeal without any reaction and then I started on barely. Day 6 (Tuesday of this week) of the barely she started to poop a lot more.
She was normally going 1x per day and day 6 till today(Friday) she has been going 5x per day its even waking her up at night to poop.I stopped the barely 2 days ago, but she is still going a lot.
How long does food take to go out of the system?
The poop is either hard and small or of a tooth paste consistency, but not at all runny.

Could this be a little reaction or just a flu or just her body changing as she is eating more?

I wanted to introduce a mixed cereal tomorrow that had wheat, should I hold off?  We do not have any allergies in the family at all. Is it ok to introduce a mixed cereal with wheat? I read conflicting reviews as to wait 1 year and other say its ok a 8 mths

Hi there:

I would think if she had the flu, the poop would be really runny and possible throwing up.

Normally a reaction will show up within the first 4 days.

That is a lot of times to be going to the bathroom though, espcially since it is waking her at night.

How is her mood?  Any rashes or anything else weird going on?

I think you would be okay to try the mixed cereal.  They do say to hold off on wheat until 1 yrs old, but if you read the ingredients of a lot of the teething biscuits, snacks, etc.  they all have wheat in them.

Since her poop is not really runny, I don't think you have to worry about dehydration.  It may just be her body getting used to a new food.

If it still continues though for a week or more, I think I would stop the new cereals and go back to just rice for a while.

Hope it goes well, Wendy

Thanks, her mood is fine, no rashes everything is normal just more poop. And yes I agree 5x is a lot to go, but it's not a lot of poop each time, quite small. Right now I have her on rice and oatmeal.

I will try the wheat and will stop all cereals except rice if this continues.

Thanks again

You know it sounds like she is constipated and just can't get it all out in one shot.

Normally rice makes lo's constipated, but some have problems with oatmeal being more constipating.

I agree with previous post it does sound like your lo is constipated, that can a symptom of an allergy/intollerance but it might not be. Is your lo still getting plenty of fluid? I would wait with the mixed cereal until yor lo's poo is back to normal.
