Help with introducing solids please
« on: September 06, 2008, 13:29:26 pm »
I'm a bit confused about introducing solids and wondered if anyone could help. My LO is on 4 hour EASY (starting at 6.30am) and sleeps well at night (7pm - 11pm DF then until 6.30am).

We were feeding 1 - 2 spoons full of fruit purree at 5pm, then changed this following advice to 11.30am (1 hour after 10.30am feed), then my MIL has been trying to convince me (sorry TELL me >:() that I should be giving her porridge before her 10.30am feed.... Should it be solids before bottle or solids after??
HELP I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!   ???

She will be 6 months old in a couple of weeks time so perhaps we've started early but she did seem to be displayed the signs for starting solids plus she already has 2 teeth and drinks whole 210ml each bottle.

Would love it if someone could tell me how many feeds of solids I should be giving her a day (and how it works from 1 solid a day to 2 or 3 and at what age). Also what we should be feeding her... so far we have tried fruit purree, baby rice, mashed banana purree and porridge.

Thanks

For the first year of their life their main nourishment will be the milk.  So it is most important to get that milk first.  The solid foods are there for practice right now, getting her use to eating solids.  For me I switched and started giving my kids the solid FIRST at about 12 months, as that is when you start to really drop the bottles and the solid foods is where they need to start getting their nourishment from in the 2nd year of life.

I also meant to say to your other question about how many times a day.  At first I did it in the morning, like you are, then about a couple weeks late I added it for after lunch, then after supper.  I kind of based it on my own child.  My daughter took right to eating solids and didn't drop her intake in milk, you don't want them to drop their milk intake at this age, so I continued to give her a bit more over time.  My son on the other hand hated purees and stayed on formula only until 7 months.  Just don't let the solids replace the milk and you'll be fine.

In regards to what to feed them it sounds like you have been doing well.  I also fed them anything that wouldn't cause an allergic reaction.  Good is Sweet Potatoes, pear, squash and carrots.  Then I moved onto peas, beans, peach.  Just remember to give them one new food a week, just in case they have a bad reaction.

Thanks Melanie, really appreciate it.

Will try feeding her bottle at 10.30am tomorrow and then trying the solids afterwards.

Thanks

No problem, glad to help!  I know our parents had their own ways, but need to respect what we do too.  My mother-in-law would keep telling me that she started feeding cereal at 2 months... I wasn't going to try that! lol  Every generation is different, that's for sure.

Hi Melanie - did you feed the solids straight after the bottle or at certain times, e.g. 12.00, 5.00 etc? Thanks

I waited about 20/30 mins before I gave mine solids. That way they would have a taste but wouldn't over do it as the milk had filled them up nicely. As Melanie said milk should be the main source of nutrition for the 1st year.

Solids should be fed more or less 1hr after milk.  Eg,milk 10.30, solids 11.30.  That should give you enough time for her to be hungry again.

Ok, great thanks, I'll stick with the solids 1 hour after milk for the time being.

When do we start to reduce the milk and solids take over a bit more?

Thanks

My lo is almost 10 months and the milk intake has not decreased yet, even though she has dropped 2 bottles (3 bottles now).  As your lo grows his appetite will grow too and he will satisfy it by increasing solids intake.  Don't worry, the baby will guide you as to what is best for him, as every lo is so different.  However you can find the guidelines on the FAQ's sections.

Yeah, I also did it 45min after they feed, mainly because it would take about 15min to feed him his milk.  8am feed milk, done at 8:15am, then solids at 9am.
