Can we quit solids!??
« on: September 08, 2008, 02:57:43 am »
Hey guys
This is my first ever post...

My little man is going through the process of working out if he has intolerances to certain food chemicals (ie, salicylates or amines).  We had a horrific time with him for the first four months of life.  He was unhappy on on the breast, has reflux too which is being medicated for, a bad sleeper (short cat naps and always tired), terrible poos.  Till eventually we saw a paeditrician who put us on Neocate formula (he has reactions to other prescribed formula).  Our little man became a very happy boy.  He was always content and starting sleeping unbelievably well during the (we started getting at least 2hr naps during the day).  Till with the help of a dietician, we have began starting solids.  He has been having them slowly for about 3 weeks.  Since beginning them, he is still really happy but only has short naps during the day.  I'm beside myself (I have postnatal depression too which doesn't help).  I loved having a baby who actually slept during the day.

My question is: Did going onto solids affect your LO's sleep?  He doesn't seem to have other reactions like nasty poos or vomitting (he did once after wheat bix) so I don't think he has an allergy as such.  I just want to give up on solids and go back to formula again.  Did anyone else feel like this?

I sure did.  I gave my son oatmeal then barley cereal at 6 months and he vomited like crazy, had a terrible reaction, diarrhea, cold sweats, lethargic.  He wouldn't even try the rice cereal, so I didn't feed him anything for another month.  After awhile I realized I had to feed him solids eventually!  So I started with the basics.  Sweet potato, squash, pear.  Now the doctor tells me to stay away from any processed foods, any jarred baby food that is a mixture of things instead of just one or two simple ingredients.  Bread is just hard because I found out he also cannot have wheat, eggs, and of course milk.

I did feed him a lot of formula only up until about 7 or 8 months.  Then I started the purees again, making sure it was the simple stuff.  Remember to let them play with the food too, like get apple slices, safe finger foods, etc.  I wish I had with my son as now he is 12 months and won't pick up anything and put it to his mouth and he can't stand anything with texture.  He is slowly trying bread, I found a good recipe, will lick it and put it in his mouth, gags every now and then, but he is sloooowwwly getting it.

Though it is tempting to keep them on what we know works, they gotta grow up sometime and we don't want to cause more problems in the future by keeping them back food-wise.  It might be good to keep a food diary so you know what reactions he gets with what food.  How old is your little man anyway?

How old is your son?  Sometimes short naps are just developmental.  Actually, not sometimes, a lot of times.  If he doesn't seem like he is having any reactions to the food (bad poos, fussy, etc.) then I would guess that he is short napping because of something developmental or he needs more awake time.

I am sorry to hear about the pnd (I had it too).  Have you found the PPD board on here?  You will find loads of support there.

Huge hugs...

Sorry, missed that part about the short naps.  Good question, how old is he?  And what type of solid foods are you feeding him?

I found solids hard work as James seemed to react to everything. I made all my own purees and only gave one food at a time. James ended up on homemade baby rice mixed with neocate and apple puree for a while as everything else seemed to cause a reaction. We finally got James eating a small variety of foods and he seemed ok. Then James became ill and would only take his neocate, after that he refused to go back to solids apart from raisins. It was at this point that we realised that James had been reacting to at least one of the foods we had been giving him as he was now a much happier and content little boy. James was also sleeping better and his eczema improved even more than it had on his limited diet. I wish I had realised that James was still reacting to something in his diet, at the time it just was not obvious as he had improved so much.

The only advice I can give is keep it simple and only give one food at a time. I would only try one food per week as this way you should be able to pinpoint a reaction easier. It is also worth keeping a food diary also.

If there is no other reaction apart from the short naps it could be developmental, especially if it is not effecting your lo's sleep at night.

I am sorry you having so much trouble.  Dealing with a fussy baby and having PPD is not an easy thing at all.

So I have the same questions as the previous posters.  How old is he and what solids did you try?

Whetabix, I would not do until after 1 yrs old because of the wheat.

I would start with rice cereal for 1 week, mixed with neocate. If all seems well, then move onto Pear, then sweet potatoe, etc.

My rule of thumb is:  If something causes them to be very fussy, poor sleep, cranky, I remove it from the diet and go onto something else.

Hugs to you, Wendy

Hi ladies - it has been quite a while since I have posted, but I have missed everyone and the interesting info we share. My older son started Kindergarten and we have had an adjustment period.

With Thomas, I quit several times with solids.  I did not know what was making him worse, but I knew he was better without them.  My doctor's office was very insistent that I do rice first, but I actually did pears and peaches because he could tolerate them without difficutly.  He has MSPI (undiagnosed until 17 months) and reflux.  He was terribly constipated on the veggies and rice; they did not want me to do oats, so I did pears.  My husband would ask me if I was ever going to move on from them, but it was what worked at the time.

If it is any consolation, he eats loads of great foods now and never lost weight.  He is not picky and will try just about anything ( on the list of course).  He loves fruit, veggies and meats.  He eats lots of rice and pasta.  He is not constipated.  He gains weight and is ahead of all developmental milestones.  He refuses any milk products (rice or almond or hemp) and will not take his calcium.  He is thriving.

Hang in there and stick to what is working.  Taking it slow is how we got to where we are.  You never know how he will turn out.  I just kept trying things using my own judgement.

Kindergarten is kicking mommy's butt right now.  Poor Thomas is so tired because he has to get up early to drop off and then be woken from his nap to pick up.  We will survive and luckily he is very easy-going.  I missed you all too and am sad that you were having so many issues with Tyler.  I am glad things are looking up.

Thanks so much for your thoughts and advice.  My little man is 6 1/2 months old.

We started wheatbix early through dieticians advice.  I took that one out for now, I'm also suspicous of apple which I have removed.

It turns out that his reflux has been bad.  I think apple may have been making the situation worse.  I called the paed. the other day and we have increased his meds.  Guess what???? He has slept 2 x 1 1/2-2hr sleeps today.  I'm totally over the moon, and so is he :)

Thanks again for your support and listening to my whinging.

Sounds like things are looking up.  It is so hard to be patient when your LO is suffering and you have no idea what to do and you are exhausted.  I think no one knows like the people on this forum, because they have all been there.

I was advised not to give ds wheat for the 1st year because is very allergic. When I started on solids I gave him the same food for 3 or 4 days so I could ruled out an allergy reaction. He was fine. The most allergenic foods are wheat, egg, fish and strawberries. Be careful!
