Alternatives for 6.5 month old not feeling the love for veggies!
« on: September 08, 2008, 12:55:27 pm »
Hi there

Began weaning my DD at 5.5 months and all was going well. Eating veggies and fruit purees. Have also introduced yogurt, porridge and cheese so far. The difference when eating the yogurt, fruit and porridge compared to veg is amazing. She leans forward and opens her mouth for the things she loves but I struggle to get her to eat the veg.

So am looking for some ideas / help:

1. How much yogurt is too much in a day? Was thinking of perhaps adding some to the veg to get her to eat it?

2. What about introducing other foods instead? Have seen a receipe for chicken, cottage cheese and yogurt and thought that might be a  winner?

3. What about cheese sauce at this age? Can I introduce that yet? Anyone had any success with adding it to veg?

4. Any other ideas anyone? Scrambled egg? Is she too young? She eats little pieces of bread so is happy with lumps.

Thanks!!!!!

I've found with my lo if I throw in a few bites of some fruit in between the spoons of veggies he doesn't seem to really notice when I give him the veggies rather then the fruit.  That really helped us when trying new things that he wasn't fond of right away or sometimes even things he'd eaten well before!

Hi there

I was doing that but the little monster has got savvy to it!!!! Tried to trick her last night to the last bit of parsnip by giving her a spoonful of yogurt first and she screamed until the yogurt re-appeared!!!!! You don't realise how intelligent they are!!!!!!

Am going to try some sweet potato in a little bit of cheese sauce tonight to see how it goes down.  Fingers crossed!

Great news - managed to get her to eat some sweet potato with grated cheese mixed in. At last something she likes that's not fruit!

hi leanne, me again ;)

one thing i used to do a lot (still do actually) for luke is make yogurt smoothies. i put a bunch of fruits in, then a few vegetable cubes, and some plain yogurt and blend it all together. i usually add flax seeds and wheat germ as well (i introduced these at about 7 mo) and sometimes even tofu! he loves it! these days he loves most veggies anyway, but in the early days when i couldn't get him to eat anything except pumpkin/butternut squash, this was a big help.
oh, and by vegetable cubes i mean cook veggies in advance, puree them, and freeze them in ice cube trays. i still do this, it's really handy to have pureed veggies to throw into his sauces, pancakes or whatever. but of course freshly cooked veggies are fine for a smoothie too.

avocado also is a good food, have you tried that yet? i don't know whether that's a vegetable or a fruit actually  ??? but usually a good ones for young babes.

her taste buds will probably change a lot as you guys go on her eating adventure, and probably even things that she likes there will be phases where she refuses them. so...enjoy  :)
