Hot dogs...
« on: September 09, 2008, 18:03:05 pm »
There has been a huge controversy in my family about whether I should be giving my 9 month old son Hot dogs for dinner or not. His doctor says it's ok, but everyone in my family swears against them because he can choke really easily on them. If I take the skin off and cut it into pieces, it should be ok, right?

I'm not sure. Hotdogs are one of those things that we stayed away from because of nutritional reasons...can you find some that are healthier ie less preservatives/sodium etc?
At 3 years old now, dh has just recently started giving some to Riley (when they watch the baseball game lol)

If you leave it as just a circular slice of hot dog, then I think it can be an issue, but I think you're OK if you cut it into "baby bite-sized" pieces.  At ~12 mo, the boys started eating them occasionally.  I cut them into slices & then cut the slices into quarters.  We haven't had an issue.  I do try to get the all-meat, low fat ones & try not to do them too often.  :-[

Which is completely reasonable... considering what hot dogs are "made out of"... I was nervous about it, but he ate a cooked hot dog and loved it. It was actually burnt a little bit and still had the skin. Just nervous about the jarred ones. Saw them the other day and picked up a couple jars. It's says they are turkey and chicken meat. I opened one up last night to feed to him, and it smelled like cat food. I tried a little piece and it didn't taste bad. How do I warm them up without them exploding in the microwave? Any ideas? Maybe boiling them?

I forget what brand it is... They are in baby food jars. In the baby food section of grocery stores.

LOL- Nick loves these - fake weiners in a jar- the texture is much better for LOs, and there are no nitrates in them. They do smell like cat food, but I'm sure he takes a nibble of our kitties' food everynow and then.
