6 mt old bf mad at my boob?
« on: September 15, 2008, 20:56:48 pm »
lo almost 6.5 mo old gets real frustrated at the boob a few times a day---and is going longer between feeds 4 hrs if not more. I get him to eat no longer than 4 hrs since he doesnt do a dream fed and sleeps all night thus having only 4 feeds a day...milk is there I pinch and it squirts...so then instead I give him a bottle and he downs it 6 or so oz of breastmilk and is mad when it's gone sometimes...What is up? He is hungry, he eats from breast no worries first thing in am and other times but 2 out of 4 feedings a day gets frustrated at the breast? If he does end up eating after putting him back on and switching sides... I am not sure if he is getting enough since it will be under 10 min of feeding as opposed to almost 15 when I know thats a good feed...he bobs on and off? Could it be he just isnt that hungry? He has not started solids yet am waiting til he can sit up good and take interest in our food and show he is hungrier!

It's a horribly distracted age. How is his weight gain, wet nappies etc? Sleeping like that would suggest that he really isn't starving. It could well be that he's just frustrated at having to work for milk he's not all that hungry to drink, hence the bottles going well 'cause he doesn't have to work for them. I'd be wary of giving him too many bottles as you could find that he starts to refuse the breast all together. Either that or using something like a medela special needs feeder (ex- habermann feeder) which mimics the work needed to bf.

You could try some breast compressions (see faq) to speed up the flow, or let him switch sides back and forth. It's kind of irritating for you, but it does mean he gets quicker access to your milk. Feeding while sleepy is another good trick - we get our best feeds in a darkened room just before nap time, or right on waking (if I've woken her) - too awake and she has better things to do than drink.
