Show and Tell for 2 year old!?
« on: September 16, 2008, 16:51:30 pm »
My son's nursery does show and tell and Sammy's day is Wednesdays. I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to send with him! Toys are a bit silly as the nursery is chock full of them and I don't want his good ones lost or broken there (he can do that just fine on his own at home!). He's not that good with talking yet - that is to say, he speaks at length without benefit of a lot of actual words! So it has to be something the staff can talk thru with him.

To complicate things, we're in the process of planning an international move so don't even have access to all our usual stuff.

Any ideas?! I'll need about 13 weeks worth of ideas!  :o

huh... i have to admit, the idea of 2 year olds doing show & tell seems kind of... hard...  have you asked around to see what sorts of things the other kids are bringing?

Hmmm...Tyler's school does show and tell for the younger ones (18 mo- 3yo). He was in that class for a couple of months. I just let him bring whatever he wanted...it was usually something like a balloon or hair clip. The kids had to put their show and tell into a box as soon as they walked in the door to school and the box went out of reach until show and tell time. Everything went back into the box as soon as they were done. Does your DS's nursery do that? If not, you might suggest it. It helps keep things from getting lost or broken. I'd also write his name on whatever it was with a permanent marker, just to be sure.

The staff help them talk about whatever it is.

I'm not sure where the items are kept as DH drops him off. I'll have to ask him. I did ask the staff what he could bring and they said 'anything'! ::)

The first week, he took an inflatable Hahooo (In the Night Garden) that he'd just got. This week, he took a pic of his brother. I think he'll take a pine cone next week but after that, I'm stumped! :D

Maybe if he made something, like coloring or fingerpainting?  Or does he "help" you with chores around the house - perhaps dusters or a dustpan and brush?  Some of dd's favorite toys are old grownup things, like rings of keys that no longer have locks that she keeps in her purse, old cellphones, plastic cookie cutters, scarves, etc.

At ds's preschool most of the kids did bring in toys.  Other items were things they found outside...a leaf, acorns, special rocks, a frog.  Some brought their pets which was always a big hit.

As the teacher said anythng will do.  I think it is just to get them comfortable with talking infront of people, asking questions and answering questions.  At ds preschool the children would get their show and tell item out of the box...(they would put it in a box at the start of school) He would stand up and tell a little about the item,(sometimes they would have nothing to say)  the children then got to ask questions...what is its name...where did you get it...how does it work.  When their turn was over they put the item in their mailbox...they were not allowed to play with the toys so there was no chance of it getting lost or broken.

I dont think bringing toys is silly...there isnt much else to bring and it gives him a chance to show and tell his friends about something he loves playing with.  Before the class started the kids at ds school would be so excited to see what the others brought, they would ask if they could hold or try their toy...it was always calm and everyone was willing to share and show off their stuff.  When class started, the teacher would say "carpet time everyone"...the kids would put their toys in the box and sit down on the carpet to start the day.
