Constant Congestion
« on: September 17, 2008, 01:58:55 am »
Well the Neocate seems to be working great for his eczema, but he still seems really congested all the time.  He's been on the Neocate now for 5 days, does it just take longer or could it be something else, such as environmental or seasonal?  I feel bad as it keeps waking him up during the night.  He's had this from day 1 and it comes and goes, but mostly it's always present, even in the dead of winter, but of course he was on regular formula then.

It does take a while for dairy to get out of the system. What solids is he on? What other foods or drinks does he get?

And it could be environmental, especially if you're spending more time indoors these days; make sure the air filter on your furnace is getting changed regularly. (Note to self: take own advice! ::))

It definitely took Thomas a good 6-8 weeks to rid his system of any unwanted dairy and soy, so hopefully in time things will improve.

Hey!

I agree it does take a while.  Also watch for hidden dairy in things.  I swear it's in more things than one would imagine.

Are you using a cool mist humidifier?  I feel it helps a lot (so long as you keep it really clean :P ).

Thanks everyone, I probably do just need to wait it out.  We don't have a furnace, all baseboard heaters here.  All he eats for solids is straight sweet potato, squash, chicken, beef, and pear (all puree...) and he nibbles on organic rice cakes, ingredients: Brown Rice and Sea Salt.  We have no pets either.

We do have a warm mist humidifier, I was thinking last night perhaps I should hook it up.  He was really congested throughout the night.  Wasn't sure if it was seasonal or not.  I get mild seasonal allergies in the spring, but feel good now.

I swore by the cool mist humidifier as well.  I used it religiously with Thomas for his first year and 1/2.  I think the white noise helps as well.  I emptied it daily and rinsed it each morning.  A bit of a pain, but still helps to keep nasal passages moist and clearer.  Is is something you can suction out of his nose?  A fight, but helpful if you can.  Dry congestion is the worst.  Are saline nose drops a possiblity?  They help loosen stuck mucus.

I am hopeful for you that things improve slowly.  I do know that I swore up and down that Thomas had seasonal allergies (he does now, but not so sure about then) last spring and summer prior to our MSPI Diagnosis, and here it was the reaction to the foods.  Even though he is not clinically allergic, he still demonstrates that reaction even with hidden dairy/soy.  I would keep a close eye on foods, keep your food diary and keep on truckin'.

Yeah I'm going to clean out the humidifier tomorrow and set it up, he does seem a lot better tonight though.  I love saline drops!  LOL!  I gotta get more, I lost my little bottle somewhere.

We each have a bottle of this stuff for winter.  I SWEAR by it!  It has some force to it and gets way up into the nasal passage.  We get it at any pharm/walmart.
