Ugh Something New::: Mucus in BM
« on: September 19, 2008, 17:05:37 pm »
So he's been on Neocate straight now for a week.  For the last couple of days his BM's have had mucus in them.  At first his face cleared up, then yesterday he started getting bumps on his face and two small dry patches of skin on his hands are coming back.  I know he hasn't eaten anything new, well except beef.  I've kept him on the same stuff now for months, the basics, no food mixes or anything like that.

The only new things are the Neocate and I switched his meat.  I buy the pureed meats in the jars and mix it in with his sweet potatoes.  I was giving him pureed chicken for the last 4 months.  Off and on he's had the beef, but not very much at all until this past week I started giving him the beef as he seems to like it more.  He gets it every day.  Hmm... now that I'm writing this I'm thinking I should switch back to the chicken to see if that makes a difference?  Or try without meat all together first perhaps?  I cannot imagine the Neocate doing this to him, well at least I hope not.  He's technically been on the Neocate for 2 weeks, first week was mixed with the Alimentum.  Then again I can't imagine beef causing problems, meat usually isn't high on the allergy list is it?

Oh and also this week I started putting real sweet potato in with his jarred pureed sweet potato.  I buy it from the store, cook it, and mash it, and mix it in.  That is technically new too, but he has always been getting sweet potato and I can't imagine something is in the sweet potato I buy from the store..

I have read that sensitivity to milk can also show sensitivity to beef (something about the cow's proteins and such).  If I can remember where I read that, I will write again.  I would guess that.  I am careful with Thomas not to overdo the red meat.

Well he didn't get any meat on Friday, and this morning he still has the mucus in his BM.  He just had another one, very VERY watery, there was nothing solid about it at all.  His youknowwhat is all red and swollen now too, and he's getting a bad bum rash.  I don't know what's going on.  Usually when this happens the nasty diarrhea goes away within a day.  I hope it will get better throughout the day today.

Oh Melanie. Poor thing.

Okay, so that chart I posted as a sticky:  If allergic to this may have a reaction to this.  It says that 10% of people allergic to cow's milk may have a reaction to beef also.

Are there any added ingredients to the jarred meat?

Could also be a virus.  I know you are WAY WAY away from me, but my older son has a stomach virus right now with mucus and blood in it.  So that is a thought. ALSO:

Remember I warned you about the constipation and very bad smelling poop with the Neocate.  That is what happened to us, BUT on the Elecare he was drinking.  Which is the same thing as Neocate, but different company, he had months and months of all water poops with tons of mucus.  I even have posted pictures on here about it.

The GI doctor told us, that was okay.  That those amino acid formula's can go right through you.

I also thought, well why in the world am I giving it to him if we are having worse poops then before, but some little ones that is all they can have because of allergies.

So.. I would stop the meat for sure, give it a week or so, see if it improves and if not talk to your doctor.  They can also do a stool sample.

That website I gave you before parent-2-parent.com  is a great place to talk to other mom's about neocate and their experience.  Almost all the mom's on there have kids on Neocate or Elecare.  When I posted about our Elecare and loose poop experience, I found it was pretty common.

Thanks Wendy, I'll check out the website.  Nothing added to the meat either.  I'll wait the week and see what happens, hopefully he'll get better.  He was great the first three days, then the eczema started up again, his congestion too, and he's been warm and sweaty, and of course the diarrhea, usual signs of a reaction for him anyways.  He's all swore so I hope he gets better for sure.

He seems okay on chicken though?  Yeah check out that site.  Of course they are not as great as us over here ;)  But... all those mommy's deal with major food allergies, intolerances, multiple protein allergies, EE, you name it.

Lots of hugs.

Yeah, he seems okay on chicken.  But to be sure he clears up I'm just keeping him on the veggies for a week then add the chicken back in, just to be sure that I'm not missing something.

One good thing though this week, he's been able to sleep now without me pinning the arms of his sleeper down to his sides.  He has stopped scratching his head and face up, which is awesome.

Glad to hear it.  Have you been on the parents with food allergies website too?  I am sure tons of mom's over there deal with multiple allergies.

Poor thing.  I really hope you can get into an allergist soon.

OH yes, so much better.   Sunday his poos went back to normal, his eczema seems to be slowly going away again, as well as his terrible congestion.  So now I can add beef to the ever growing list of foods he cannot eat. :/

So good to hear he is better.  Does your doctor realize he is having these many problems?

Yes, he's my general family doctor though, he really is clueless to all of this stuff and is relying on me to inform him.  The pediatrician doesn't really believe in Intolerances and didn't believe it was an allergy and just brushed me off, so I have no input from him, this was 6 months ago.

It is the Pediatric Dietitian I saw at the hospital who is really leading the way.  She leads me and I tell my family doctor what to do lol.  She told me to get the Neocate prescription from my family doctor and to get a referral from him to see the allergist at the IWK.  To do that I had to wait to get an appt, and now I'm waiting again to hear from the allergist.  I don't know if there is anything more I can do right now.

Without a pediatrician I don't really know.  The one from the hospital is great, but she's not really my doctor, so I don't really know.  Even when I see the allergist I don't know what he's going to say, especially if he says it's not an allergy and he knows nothing about intolerances.... Gah.

Gosh, the medical system there seems so complicated.  Could you call the allergist yourself?

You know though regardless if he gets allergy tested or not, you know that he cannot handle these foods.  It would just be nice to have some confirmation or support, you know.

So what are your list of foods now that he can handle?

Yeah I know, it's craziness.  I can't call the allergist himself, they won't do a thing without a referral from the family doctor.  Probably because I don't pay anything out of pocket, if I was a paying customer I'm sure they'd want my business right?  But when it's the government paying I have to follow all the steps and wait.  It's already been 3 weeks, I hope they call soon.

I know for sure that he can handle:

Neocate
Rice Milk and/or anything to do with rice such as rice puffs, rice cakes.
Sweet Potato
Squash
Pear
I think he can handle chicken, but I'm going to wait another week until his eczema clears up more so I can tell if he reacts to it.

I keep giving him stuff, thinking it's safe, then finding out he cannot tolerate it.  Yesterday he ate some Toddler Mum-Mums organic.  The ingredient list looked good, then I saw it had Gelatin in it.  Well today I found out that gelatin usually comes from beef and/or pork, sometimes fish.  Well I had no idea it was an animal byproduct, so I don't know if this is why his eczema seems to be lingering, we'll see.  I e-mailed the company who makes those biscuits asking where exactly their gelatin comes from.  He may not react to it at all, but I cannot be sure.  Should clear up totally by Sunday, least the stuff on his face and hands.

I want to try more, but it's a slow process when he reacts to something it sometimes takes a day or two for me to realize it, then a week to clear up his symptoms before I try something new.  Not sure what to try next, guess I'll try green beans or peas and hope for the best.  I should just stick to the basics from now on lol.
