6.5 month old waking every 2-3 hours
« on: September 25, 2008, 14:48:47 pm »
Hello.

We are having huge NW problems. For 3 weeks he slept through the night at 3 months, but woke up starving! Then he woke once at 3am and that has been pretty consistent. Later, when solids were started he woke up at 3 and 5 am. Now, our LO wakes every 2 to 3 hours. I'm exhausted!

How old is your child? 6.5 months old male

What’s his/her daily routine? wake: 7am, Breakfast 9am, nap afterwards for 1-2 hours. Lunch at 12:00 and then nap for 1-2 hours. He will nap again around 4 or 5pm. Supper at 5:30pm, Bath around 7pm, breast and or bottle, before bed  shortly thereafter. then he wakes at 10pm, 12am, 3am, 5am and 7am.

What’s nap routine? one nap in the morning and 2 in the pm.

How long are naps? 1-2 hours. used to be just one hour like clockwork since he was younger, now he sleeps longer.

What's bedtime routine? Time? bath 7pm, breast or bottle, read or relax and bed usually before 8pm. usually awake, may fuss alittle. wil fall asleep on his own.

Do you bottle or breastfed?? both

How much? or how long? Breast 6 times a day for snacking between meals. he gets a bottle when i am not around or prefers one before bed.

If breastfed.. one side or both?? (at each feed) usually both because he hates the left one. i always start on the left one and then he fusses so i have to switch. when he is done he unlatches.

How many wakes per night? This last week 3-5 wakes. up to every 2 hours.

What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up? Just long enough to nurse and then back down. He seems to be nursing a little longer now..... not just a few seconds.

When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry? Usully fussing. If i wait he is crying and angry. When i pick him up he is searching and sucking on my neck!

What have you tried to settle?? The only thing so far is breast for NW. he will take his soother if he is settling to go to sleep no problem. Pick up and put down also works for when he going down to sleep. but this doest seem to work in the middle of the night, he wants to nurse.

What do you do for A time and how long is it? individual play, interaction etc... 1-3 hours depending on how he fusses and if it's nap time. Then I put him down.

Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones? I imagine he's teething... and growth spurt at 6 months+

Have you introduced cereal? Why, how much, and how many times a day? (for LO’s under 6 months) Cereal for breakfast. Lunch and dinner: meat with veg and fruit. Snacks are usually nursing.

Do they have a prop? If so what is it? Mobile. He seems to like it.

Do they have a lovie? Lovie? I'm canadian! Do you mean secuirty blanket? Yes it's a green frog (we're french canadian)!

Hiya

Just a couple of questions:

1) Is he having BF before solids at each meal time
2) Do you offer him the breast at every nightwaking?

In response to Nicole:
is BF for breast fed or bottlefed?

1) My LO is not breast or bottle fed before solids, he does have the breast after waking up at 7am, solids at 9am, breast after his nap if he wines around 10:30-11, solids at 12pm, nap and then breast at 3pm, breast after his second nap in pm maybe, solids around 6pm and breast at 8pm before bed. He will get a bottle instead of breast if I am not threre and he is babysat.

2) I do offer breast at night, only way to settle him, he goes right back to bed afterwards.

Sorry I meant breast fed :)

The reason I asked about the feeding routine was to determine whether he could be filling up on solids and not taking enough milk which might then cause him to wake hungry in the night.  However, as he is having a milk feed first and then solids a bit later I doubt that this is the main issue.  Saying that ... most babies of his age are having 4 milk feeds a day and go about 4 hours between feeds, so roughly 7, 11, 3, and 7.  The fact that he is eating more often might mean that he is snacking a bit and therefore not taking in enough calories to see them through the night.

Secondly, it looks to me like the breast has become a sleep prop and there is a feed to sleep association going on.  That is, when he wakes at night he has learned to expect the breast to help him get back to sleep.  At 6 months it is possible that he will still need a night feed but not fed every 2-3 hours.  I would advise you to try other methods of settling him so that he learns not to expect the breast at each NW.

Have a look here ...
