2 week old wakes frequently
« on: October 03, 2008, 13:39:34 pm »
Hello!
I have a 2 week old who is just 6 pounds. She was 5lb 9oz at birth.
During the day she has been on EASY. She generally needs to eat every 2 hours because of her small size, but if she goes until 3 hours I let her (is this okay??) She has a little awake time (20 minutes or so) and then sleep time. Sometimes she needs a little help falling asleep. I do rock her for about 5 minutes or so. She is not difficult during the day.

My problem is at night. She will wake on  her own and feed every 2 or 3 hours and goes back down. She doesnt always give me a burp after feeding.
Then, 20, 30 or 60 minutes after she goes back down she fusses and cries out...it is very frustrating. I do pick her up and rock her for a few minutes, and put her down again. She will fall asleep and then cry out again.
Im not sure what to do or how to solve this problem, but I am not getting sleep.  :(

god bless you, this is totally normal - she's only 2 weeks old.  Hang in there, it gets better.  Could be the burp caught in her tummy, could be farts, could be she's falling asleep before she's finished eating, could be she's just not got the hang of this sleeping thing yet.  Are you swaddling?  Those times sound like it could be sleep twitches jerking her awake, swaddling helps with that.

Letting her go 3 hours between feeds should be no problem, you wouldn't want to let it go much longer in the day b/c those frequent day feeds will promote longer night sleeps.

Hugs, we all know how hard it is to get through those first weeks - just try to sleep whenever you can, day or night.  It does get better!

She may be waking so soon after feeding because she does need to burp.  That happened with our son -- sometimes I was a bit lazy (shocking for the middle of the night, I know) and didn't persevere in having him burp.  Almost always he would wake up within 30 minutes crying from the need to relieve gas one end or the other.  Perhaps just hold her over your shoulder for just a minute or two longer after each feed to see if there's a bubble to come out.  This still happens to us periodically after our dreamfeed.  Some kids are just gassy.

Definitely could be burping. My son was colicky and TERRIBLE at burping. Even the nurses at the hospital couldn't get burps out of him.
 And we had this too.

Try to hold him upright for ten minutes after you feed, it might help. You can also feed with him slightly upright as well.
