Questions about pat/shush
« on: October 05, 2008, 03:38:01 am »
I'm trying to wean my 10 wks old from rocking so I moved him out of his pram and am trying to get him to sleep in his crib.

I tried using pat/shush very unsuccessfully. Fortunately he doesn't cry when I pat on his back in the crib, but most of the time doesn't fall asleep from pat/shush or patting with the white noise. Usually he'd move his head around and never reach even the 7 miles look. Sometimes he would fall asleep and then I gradually reduce the strength of the patting, but keep patting, and he would wake up after a few minutes and I have to start all over again. And Other times when it does work and I stay around for the 20 minutes jolt, he would wake up 10 minutes past the jolt.

I'm really confused. Should I not reduce the patting strength once calm and asleep? How long should I continue to pat past the 20 mins jolt (I stop a little after he's back to sleep). I get the feeling as though the patting is waking him up, although he's not touchy/grumpy.

Would appreciate any help and suggestions,
Tuty

here is a link on the technique of shh/pat.  Have a look at it and see if it answer your question babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=26672.0.  Please let us know if there are any other questions  :-*

IF he's settled, I'd try stopping the patting and maybe just shh, or even leave the room entirely and see what happens.  If the patting is keeping him awake, maybe he will just go off to sleep if you leave him be.

I'd try placing your hand firmly on his chest but not patting. My DD seems to prefer it
