Waking 2-3 times a night
« on: October 06, 2008, 04:13:08 am »
Hi
Would like some advice re. routine for a 4 month old. we have had a rough start with severe reflux and have finally on medication that is helping but am trying to work out if there is something wrong with my schedule or whether it is his reflux so thought I'd look at the easier option first ... the routine.

7am Eat
9am Sleep (1.5 - 2 hours)
11am Eat
1 pm sleep (2 hours)
3 pm Eat
5 pm Sleep (30 -45 mins)
5.30pm Eat
6 pm Bath, time with Dad
7.30 pm final feed, bedtime routine ... swaddle, story, sing and bed.

He usually wakes 2 - 3 (sometime more) times a night, sometimes 2 hourly, other times he wil sleep 4 hours and then wake every two hours after that. I will pat/ shush him first, then try paci (used because of reflux... but he is starting to refuse it) and then as last resort will feed. He will feed and then go back to sleep.Have tried putting him to bed later but it makes no difference. We have DF but he was taking less and less and then stopped it himself. I am not expecting him not to wake during the night (although many friends with similar aged babies have theirs sleeping thorugh) I am getting really tired though .. last night had 4 hours sleep :-(
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks

Hi Girls...Ginger01, your routine looks really good...except for the last part of the day perhaps.

At 4 months, A times are usually between 1 hour 45 and 2 hours maximum.  If you are getting 1.5-2 hour naps in the am and pm...then the A times you have are perfect.  I suspect it's the last A time of the day that's a little too long given the catnap is only 30-45 mins (oh and 45 mins - 1 hour is great for the catnap).

How about cutting that last A time down to 1 hour 30 mins and see how it goes?

If this doesn't work, then there may be a sleep prop issue and he can't get himself back to sleep (after 2 sleep cycles) without your intervention.  Do you feed at night?  Is he waking out of hunger?
