9 months old awake for 2 hours in the middle of the night!!
« on: October 06, 2008, 20:15:15 pm »
I wish I could know what is happening with my child  ??? (She is a grumpy-touchy 9 months old) or what I am doing wrong, any advice that you can give me will be very appreciated,  the last two weeks some days she wake up in the middle of the night crying, usually when this happens, I go to her room and start shushing and she goes back to sleep, but these days shushing does not work, at first she apparently goes back to sleep, but few minutes later she cries again, I do the shushing again and the cry becomes a mantra cry and that mantra cry sometimes become louder and increases and then I do pu/pd several times, then the she stops crying but she is not asleep yet,  so she does the mantra cry over and over…then the cry increases again and I do the pu/pd, but she won’t fall asleep, It takes two hours for her to sleep!!! I am afraid there is a pattern developing because she did this  yesterday and the day before, last night I was so tired that I fed her, she took a full feed then she slept.
The reason of this behavior can be hunger?? Or is she OT?  is she in pain? Separation Anxiety? Usually she knows how to sleep on her own but I don’t know why is this happening.

I think that yesterday was so tiring day for her, she only took her morning nap, may be that could be the reason, but sometimes the same thing happens in a good day when she takes her naps, so I am bit confused.

Our day is like this:

8:30 Wake up and BF, play with mom.
9:30 Breakfast,  Cereal and Fruits
10:30 Nap (yesterday she took 2 hours because she was tired of the night before, usually takes 1 hour)
12:30 BF, play.
1:30 lunch
2:00 Outing  or play.
3:00 Usually at this time she takes a 1 hr nap, yesterday as we were out she did not want to take it.
4:30 BF then  play.
6:00 dinner
7:45 bath
8:15 BF, sleep.

Sometimes she wakes up around 6am, i feed her and she goes back to sleep until 8:30.

As I said, she knows to sleep on her own, Sometimes she sleeps while nursing(at night), sometimes not. If not, fusses a little before sleeping but she ends up falling asleep without me. Do i have to feed her before the bath?

Thanks

We went through this with dd1 - she would be up for a couple of hours every night for several months.  We never got to the bottom of it, but it stopped on its own.  If feeding her settles her, then it might be that she is hungry - I remember that for some of the time that we were up with dd1 it was hunger, and when it wasn't feeding didn't work.

Sorry not to be able to help a bit more.

Hi there

Yes this can be a phase.  It does sound like she was OT as a result of not having the afternoon nap..she had almost 8 hours of A time which is way too long. At this age, A time should be between 3-4 hours maximum.

Therefore, I would work on the routine and aim for 2*1.5 hour naps during the day.  Try to even out the A times a little as the first nap is only allowing 2 hours of A time....stretch this out perhaps.

I would be aiming for this:

8:30 Wake up and BF, play with mom.
9:30 Breakfast,  Cereal and Fruits
11:30 Nap  for 1.5 hours
1.00  BF, play.
1:30 lunch
2:00 Outing  or play.
4:00 Nap for 1.5 hours
5:30 BF then  play.
7:30 dinner
7:45 bath
8:30 BF, sleep.

This routine allows 3 hours A time before all naps.  What do you think?

If this doesn't work after giving it a good go for 5 days...then it could be SA.

It sounds good because she has been having 45 min naps may be she can have more A time. I will try the routine you are suggesting me  :D
The first change I made last night was that I did not nurse her to sleep and apparently It worked because she did not wake up until 6 AM. I can't tell if that was the reason because she so unpredictable!!
Today she took a 45 nap in the morning but the missing time was compensed with a 2 hour nap at 3pm. I did not nurse her to sleep today either, I hope we have a great night!!
Thanks a lot!!

hi i am interested in this as my lo has started to wake some nights for 2 hours and is quite happy to lay awake and not go back to sleep. could it be separation anxiety related?
