Weaning...Is she getting what she needs??
« on: October 08, 2008, 03:07:00 am »
I am in the process of weaning and I'm a little confused as to how this whole thing works. DD is just over 11 months, and refuses to take
formula and whole milk. Does she need one of these in place of bf? Is it three servings of dairy that she needs? Is it ok for me to give her
yogurt 2 times a day? I am so worried that she will not get what she needs.
Help....

3 servings of dairy does work but the problem is what that actually means. A 'dairy serving' is equivalent to about 6oz of milk and that is BIG. One baby-sized yoghurt e.g. a petit filous fromage frais is 1/2 a dairy serving. In cheese we are talking about a piece the size of a UK matchbox (size of a credit card but 3/4 inch thick).
I would continue offering other milks. Make fruit smoothie. Flavour with some natural vanilla. Think about how you cook with dairy - cream and creme fraiche pasta sauces, butter in cooking - it adds up.
Also look at other sources of calcium. Learn about what is in dairy and where else it can be found in the diet. Nothing in there is exclusive to dairy. It is possible to wean a baby who refuses other milks but it takes a bit of creative thinking.
