4 month old distracted/pulling on & off
« on: October 22, 2008, 09:42:38 am »
Lily has always yanked a bit in the evenings, I'm assuming due to lower supply. The last month or so, she's pulled on and off throughout lots of her feeds, looking backwards as if there's something more interesting. If people come in and talk to me or I feed her in public it's worse. I worry that it's my supply diminishing but she doesn't seem distressed and still has all the good signs (wet nappies, active etc) Any ideas? It's making some feeds difficult and long (I try to give her 20 mins on)

I found the same but also DS would get aggitated after a while and it was because I was used to feeding him 2 hourly and he could now stretch out to 3 hourly. I'm finding a bit the same now, where I can't feed him until he's ready which can be up to 4 hours now. He will fuss a lot and pop on and off (although willing to attach he's not willing to wait until the let-down).

I believe 4 months is really the age where they become more interested in surroundings.  They also feed much quicker so once let-down has happened they can finish quickly.

Now DS will stay on and concentrate on feeding only when he is truly hungry.  I also feed in a quiet room now.  ;D

We have this problem BIG TIME.  I agree with mum101, I've read everywhere that 4 months is the big distractible age.  Does she just open up and get off or is she pulling on you?  Mine is pulling on my nipple something fierce and it's killing me.  :(

Hi ladies, Yes i can remember that at 4mths its was all too interesting for Zane ;) What i found that really worked for me was that when he came off i would let him sit up and look around then after 5-10 mins put him back on and he would finish a feed. I know its not always possible (when your out) but it just makes its much easier in the long run.

Have you tried a feeding neckless? you can get them on ebay, just a thought :)

em_axo - ouch :P , do you know when its going to happen? if so you could try breaking the latch just before and having break for a min.

Leo is still a bit fidgety while waiting for let-down now, so I have a small toy in my hand when I know he's getting grumpy waiting.  Takes the pressure off me and also stops him from pulling off. Since he bit me and drew blood I like to avoid situations where he pulls off!

I take the toy away once the let-down comes.
