EBM amounts
« on: October 22, 2008, 10:53:50 am »
I have been pumping recently and have a stash of EBM in the freezer.  I was wondering how much to give at a feed instead of the breast when we go out for the day.
According to Kellymom, babies take an average of 750ml a day until they are 6 months old.  Given that Euan gets 5 feeds a day that means he should get 150ml (5oz) in a bottle.
Does this sound about right?
I had a look at some formula tins, according to them Euan should be getting anywhere from 210ml (7oz) to 240ml (8oz).  150ml doesn't seem that much.

TIA for any advice

It sounds right. Maybe 6oz. Babies tend to drink less ebm than formula as bm has a slightly higher calorie and fat content on average and is absorbed more efficiently by the body. You need more formula as it is absorbed less effectively.

So you reckon 6oz (180ml) is OK then?  That's good enough for me.   ;D ;D
I figured it had something to do with calories and fat content, but DH (bless him) wanted to be sure.  We are off out for the day on Saturday and as Euan is a nightmare to feed at the best of times, let alone in public, we're going to give him EBM in a bottle and I will pump on my trusty hand pump at the same time.

Thanks for the advice.
Allison.

As always, Emma gives great advice.  :D  FYI,  both my boys were feeding 5-6 oz at that age.  (We never fed more than 6 oz EBM.)
