So I got mastitis again.
« on: October 23, 2008, 18:44:54 pm »
Ladies I do not know what the deal is, but got Mastitis again. This time I did it without antibiotics but it was pretty rough for about 4 days. Still having pains in my breast, but feeling much better. I really have no clue why I got it. We are doing so well. I'm all healed been nursing for 4mths now, so 2mths without a hitch. Then all of a sudden get a headache, breast tenderness, and a fever. I really do not want to get Mastitis again, but not sure why I keep getting it? The reason why I did it without Antibiotics is cus I'm allergic to penicillin and the antibiotic the doc prescribed me is a L3 rating and has giving babies bloody stool.

HUGS, mastitis is awful and a bit scary.

My only thought was perhaps to change position of feeding on occasion and also to pump to completely empty your breasts every few days or once a week perhaps.  Just wondering if they are getting fully emptied.  Otherwise, I don't know what else!  I wonder if a professional who knows  a lot about bf might be able to help.?

There is a useful checklist here as to why some women might get recurrent blocked ducts/ mastitis:
http://www.llli.org/FAQ/repeatmastitis.html
It's pretty comprehensive. Anything a possibility?

I've heard that regular breast compressions during feeding can also help avoid mastitis.

Also, did you know that you can use garlic as a broad spectrum antibiotic?  I used this to combat mastitis a few months ago and it worked a charm.  I too am alergic to penicillin and didn't want to take the antibiotics that my GP prescribed as I'd been battling excruciating ductal thrush for a while.

You take a whole clove of garlic, cut it into pieces and swallow it like pills. You need to take between 2-6 cloves a day.  You will smell like a walking tube of garlic puree but it does work lol!

Odorless garlic pills don't do the same thing I'm afraid as it's the "smelly" bit of garlic that's the all important bacteria bashing component ;)

I will have to try the garlic cloves. I also read on line that apple cyder vinegar works too. So I will give it a try. I want to breast feed her for as long as I can, but its so hard when you get mastitis just cus you feel so sick.
