Gas pains causing night wakings? What to do???
« on: October 24, 2008, 15:53:39 pm »
My dd is 10 weeks and I am concerned because she wakes up at least 4 times a night and gets so squirmy that sometimes it is really difficult to get her to stay asleep.  I think some of her wakings are due to hunger (at most 2 feedings per night), but I think that most of the time her sleep is interupted by gas pains.  I try to patt shussh her threw them.  I also sometimes will unswaddle her, push her legs up, bicycle them and burp her.

I do not unswaddle her when I feed her at night.  Would it help to do that?  I try to help her "sleep" through the feeds as much as possible. When she is swaddled it is hard to burp her, but I try.

Does she just need to "grow out of it"?  Does anyone have any suggestions? I feel so bad for her.  I can hear her having toots all night long.  It doesn't seem to bother her naps too much.

Here is her schedule.  It does vary some days, but I try my hardest to stick to it.  Also, at what age is it reasonable for her to only eat once after the dream feed?

6:15 wake up
7:00 E
A
8:00 S (usually about 45 minutes)
10:00 E
A
11:30 S (usually about an hour- but we are doing errands, so it is in the carseat)
1:00- E
A
2:30- S (usually about 2 hours)
4:30- E
A
6:00- snack
Catnap 6:30-7:00
7:30 or 8:00- E
Bedtime 8:00-8:30
Dream feed between 10:00-11:00- depending on what time she ate last
WAKES UP different times each night.  Sometimes at 12:30ish.
WAKES UP again somewhere between 1:00-2:30
WAKES UP again somewhere between 4:00-5:30
WAKES UP  for the day at 6:15

Any help would be very much appreciated.  Thank you for your time and support.

hello

looking at your schedule it looks like she naps from 8- 8.45am, and is then awake till 11.30, when she has another hour nap, then awake for 2hrs until 2.30- is that right? I would guess that a reason for her nightwakings is overtiredness as she's not having enough sleep during the day. Overtiredness is a bugger and can really mess up their night sleep as they are not rested enough to be able to settle into good quality night time sleep.

This thread is a good guideline of how long a baby can usually handle staying awake-

You can see at 10 weeks it's going to be roughly 1hr 15mins max each time.
I would try adjusting your routine to allow for more naps and hopefully once she is more rested you should see a difference

That is great advice.  I don't think I was very specific the schedule I posted, because she does nap really well.  Usually the only 45 minute nap she has is the first nap.  The rest, she usually goes for 1.5 hours or 2 hours.  If for some reason they are short, I do patt-shh to get her to sleep longer.
