We went back to the allergist today - MSPI question
« on: October 28, 2008, 18:32:01 pm »
Well Tyler is still so fussy, it is not even funny. Since no potato's he has no gas at all!!!  His skin still has all those little bumps all over it, which I have been told is just KP, BUT the allergist said today it looked more like excema.  So he prescribed a cream.

They did more food testing (skin prick) and all were negative again.  So he thinks it is all a matter of trail and error to see what is the problem.

So now he is on all rice milk mixed with cocunut milk.

Maybe he is just a fussy kid, really really fussy?

SO:  HAS ANYONE THAT HAS HAD MSPI, WAS THE ONLY SYMPTOM EXTREME FUSSINESS?  His poops are normal on soy milk and rice milk, but whole milk causes all runny poo's.

Better go, he is screaming........  once again......  I am going crazy.

Hugs Wendy - that's no fun.  I don't have any personal experience with MSPI but would suggest you try cutting out all dairy protein and all soya protein and see if that makes a difference - I think it takes a fortnight to completely come out of the system - fingers crossed you'll finally get your answer :-*

That is what we are doing now.  He has been on rice milk for 3 or 4 days now, but still was doing hidden dairy, so we are now cutting out that compeletly.

It is just hard because with DS1, he showed all the symptoms, fussy, gassy, diaherra, but DS2 only shows extreme fussiness and well very loose poop when he did drink lactaid.

I would think it is possible as the symptoms can range greatly.  I mean my son NEVER had diarrhea on milk/soy, nor did he have any gas.  However he did have eczema real real bad, and congestion.  But with other foods he has different reactions.  So I definitely think he can just have one or two of the symptoms and in varying degrees.

When did you cut out the hidden dairy?

DD has eczema and is still MSPI to a degree. Her main symptoms were constant screaming and fussing and very loose mucousy stools. Big hugs to you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Oh we have just started that today.  I am sure that is what is going on, well I atleast hope.  I just want him to be happy.

Really it is so stressful in this house, it is not funny.

I have to get out all my notes and info on when Zach was MSPI.  I had it down so good as to what he could eat, etc.  I have forgotten all that now, well to a point.

Hey Emma: Yeah that is the thing that throws me off is his poop is pretty much normal, but his mood is unbearable most of the time.

sounds as though you have the skin rash as well as the foul mood. two of which are symptoms of MSPI, have you cut out trace dairy too? Like biscuits are made with butter?

Weird thought, but with Josie it's sugars, ESPECIALLY High Fructose Corn Syrup (which is in like EVERYTHING  >:(), that sets her off and makes her act like that. It's like she needs Midol, seriously, at 7 years old! ::) :P

With many kids it's artificial colors and flavors - the FD&C Red #5 (I think that's the number it has over here) is made from cochineal, which is the shell of an insect and often is at the root of behavior problems due to allergy/intolerance/reaction in general. Again, though, it's in so much stuff here in the States! (I think it's been outlawed in Europe?)

Gotta run, but wanted to suggest other possible causes.

I need to do some more reading on that, because it deft. could be that.  It is so hard to cut out that though just because, like you said it is in everything...

I am suspecting sugar or possibly artifical colors being a problem with Zach also and heck maybe myself too.

So what foods do you give Josie? What does she eat each day.

That would be very helpful.

Thanks, Wendy

B has just fussiness when he has milk.  he has very slight eczema when he was little, but now he only shows signs of fussiness ater having it.  he will wake in the middle of the night which he never does normally.  He has never been tested, but we ust notice a difference.

Heh, heh.

We do have yogurt here, actually, with orange-flavored fish oil in it (and some vanilla and stevia, tastes kinda like creamsicle). I'd say probably daily or every other day/every 3 days, depending on if she's sick of it or not. :P

We also get some cereal bars from Trader Joe's that have some sugar but zero HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) and pretty much avoid the artificial cr@p. We've got breakfast cereal from TJ's as well - same deal with the ingredients.

I've got some almonds that have been soaked and then dried again in the oven, with some salt and garlic and oregano; tasty! Ditto on pumpkin and sunflower seeds, which are great with salt!

Meat, veggies, grains soaked and cooked from scratch. Pasta maybe 2x/week. Tonight we broke down and had pizza, but that's maybe 2x/month. Whole grain porridge for breakfast when I can remember to soak the grains overnight.

I'll try to get back to this tomorrow, since I'm now sneezing right and left, but the more we cook from scratch, including frozen veggies (she even like OKRA! and she'll tolerate a BIT of broccoli with butter and salt and garlic), the better things are. And the more Grammy (aka MIL, aka names I won't repeat) sneaks her candy, the worse it gets.

It will be hard to follow that diet but worth it if it works. I make most of our meals from scratch as I like to know exactly what is in it. I have to say though we do occasionally cheat but not very often and I do always feel bad about it afterwards.

It could just be MSPI as he does have 2 of the symptoms. I really hope you get to the bottom of this soon.

Thanks everyone!  Thanks Deb for the ideas, and LOL about the MIL comment (Ha)

We do know for sure that his combination food intolerance is sugar and fruit.  He can have both, but not together within 4 hours of each other.  Also of course no form of potatos at all.

Avoiding sugar is just so hard, I mean it is in everything thing you look at, bread (even MSPI safe bread).

On top of all this, he is also cutting his molars.  He has 2 of them in and 2 more cutting the skin now. So I know that has some to do with it, but I know for sure, it is not the main reason.

So we are now milk/soy free and I am going to be very careful about the sugar/fruit combo.  I think I am just going to cut out all fruit and even 100% fruit juices for a while to see if that makes a difference also.  Then slowly add things back in.

He will get used to water and he loves his rice milk with cocunut milk.

Honey?  I have a couple of bread recipes that use that instead of sugar.
