How Fast Does Diarrhea Reaction Occur?
« on: October 30, 2008, 15:18:49 pm »
So my son woke up, had his Neocate.  Then at 10am he had a normal bowel movement.  At 11pm he ate a full bowl of Squash for the first time in about 2 weeks as I suspected he might be reacting to it.  Then at 12pm, noon, he had mucusy diarrhea.  Is Squash the culprit?  Isn't it too soon to react via diarrhea to the food he just ate an hour earlier?  Or is this common?  He hasn't eaten anything new in the last two weeks, just Sweet Potato and Neocate.  He now also has a nasty bum rash just from that one time diarrhea.... Though this may be the beginning, we'll see how the rest of the day goes, but it seems too soon?

I would say NO SQUASH.  Just to give you an example.   I am allergic to potato's.  I have been in denial.  I ate some french fries a few weeks ago and within 15 minutes, I was in the bathroom doing the same thing.

I cannot wait for you to go to the allergist.  I am so curious to what he will show positive too.

HUGS sweetie, Wendy

Wow, that IS fast!!
He was fine the rest of the afternoon, though he was congested and sweaty.  He had another bowel movement before bed, it wasn't mucusy, but it was still real soft.  And it made his bum all red again.

We talked to the nurse at the IWK today, and she said they booked time to go over his history, and they booked time to do skin test depending on what the doctor says.  Plus they booked time for us to speak to a pediatric nutritionist at the IWK hospital.  So I definitely think it's worth going.  The appt will be about 2 hours.  The letter told us if they react to any fruit or veggies to bring a fresh sample.  Would that mean I should bring a whole squash?? Or do you think that it would be fine to cut it up and bring a smaller piece since we are leaving here the same day as the appt.  5 hour drive.

I think just a cut up piece is fine and maybe put it on ice since you have a long drive.

So you will need to bring a lot of fruits and vegetables, right?

She said they would do skin prick test depending on what the doctor says.. I would hope to God that he would do it.  I am sure after you tell him the history and the only thing he can eat, they will test him.

He does not take any antihistamines by chance does he?
Allergy med?

I sure hope they do the test too!

I don't think I need to bring anything other than the Squash though.  Every time I'm about to try him on a new fruit/veg something else happens, like he gets a nasty cold that lasts almost 2 weeks, or I decide to give him toothpaste on the same day as something else and I can't tell what's going on.  Or I'm about to start a new veg when we just come back from someones house who I forgot has cats and then he breaks out again!  OR I start on the Alimentum for 3 weeks which brings back all of his symptoms and I want to wait until he's completely clear before trying something else...

I've only ever tried sweet potato, squash, peas, beans, pear, and apple.  Sure sounds like lots, but he gags on the peas and beans (purees) as they are more chunky and he vomits it all out with the first bite.  Pear he likes and has no problems with.  Apple he refuses to open his mouth after one bite!  He is so picky.  He loves his sweet potato though lol.

Plus when I spoke to my pediatric dietitian a few months ago she told me to avoid strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and any fruit that has citrus in it.  So I never tried many of the other fruit out there.

He doesn't take any antihistamines either.  I was advised by my doctor months ago to give him Benadryl, but it caused him sever diarrhea!  So does Advil... so yeah, nothing.

I remember the orange color.  Zach's nose was all orange.

Does your daughter have any problems?

Are you keeping a journal or something of all his reaction, like the cats, the foods, etc.

I think I would take peas and beans aswell just incase he is not gagging and being sick due to the consistency. It could be that he is allergic to them and gets a funny feeling straight away. I had this with a few things for my ds.

Kelly - that's a good point.  I will bring them just in case.  I'll bring strawberries too as usually they are high on the list.

Wendy -  Yeah, I wrote down a few things, they add up fast lol.
My daughter has no allergies whatsoever.  She's got perfect skin, never had any food issues!  They are so different.

Oh, and an update.  Yesterday his skin was completely perfect and clear.  Today he has little red patches and bumps on his cheeks.  This is how his eczema starts.  I believe if I were to continue with the squash it would develop back into full eczema.  I think what is also making it worse, as oppose to last time he had squash, is this time I mixed half with homemade squash, and half with bottled squash.  It is still Butternut squash but it is more concentrated as the bottled squash is like half water pretty much.
