Reaction to Chocolate, I think....please NO
« on: October 31, 2008, 13:39:40 pm »
DD is almost 3 and I finally decided to cave in and let her have chocolate.

About 1 month ago, I let her have choc pudding and she was fine.

2 weeks after that she had a small sip of my hot choc and the next day she broke out in a rash on her face which looked almost like chicken pox (about 6). I brought her to the DR because she also had a cold and wasn't sure if the cold and rash were connected (totally forgot that she had a sip of my hot choc and didn't mention to DR). The DR thought that she had a virus and gave her anti biotics and her cough was gone within a couple of days) No more spots ever appeared.

On Monday this week gave dd about 1/8"cube of semi-sweet choc at about 10am (i must be nuts LOL) and at 1pm dd was complaining of a stomach ache and had diarrhea and then had it again at 4pm.

Could this be a reaction to choc? or just a coincidence?
Tonight is Halloween and I am going to hold off giving dd Choc. If she is having a reaction, I want to wait a few more days until her immune system was fine again.

Any thoughts?

Wow, sure sounds like a reaction to me.  Did she eat anything else that day which was out of the ordinary?

the only other thing she ate that day (Monday) was a rice krispie square.

When should I try it again with her? Is tomorrow too early? If something were to happen, I want to make sure that DH is home with me.
I am worried about giving it to her incase she has a severe reaction.

Is this an allergy that is usually grown out?
Ohh not sure if the 2 are connected, but she has had white choc before in a muffin a few times and never had a reaction to it.

If she seems completely fine right now, no bum rash from the diarrhea, face is clear, attitude is normal, I don't see any reason why not to try it tomorrow.  I would maybe give her a tiny tiny bit, like 1 chocolate chip or something like that.  Though you may want to see what others say on this board.  I really don't have that much experience with this stuff myself and would hate to see something go wrong.

It is just so hard to tell.  Just an example when we trialed tyler on Lactose Free Whole Milk, at the same time his brother was getting over a stomach virus.  Not sure if Tyler's reaction was to the milk or the virus, but given our history, i stopped milk.

It really does sound like a reaction to me, but could be sick also.

I personally would not push it right now.  I mean if she has never had chocolate before, she want miss it for now.
