Cows milk
« on: November 03, 2008, 17:39:04 pm »
Hi.  My DS turned one at the weekend and saw HV for weighing etc but she wasn;t very clear on what we are now meant to do re bottles.

He has been weaned onto bottles and formula since 9 months, and has bottle in am, pm and just after lunch if I can get him to have it!  He has a brilliant appetite and diet and uses a cup for water and any juice. Has lots of other good protein and calcium sources.

My Q's are;

How much should he now be having?

How do I get him to have cows milk rather than formula?  He really isnt keen.  Either from a bottle or cup.

Could i mix the cows milk and formula together for a few times, gradually decreasing the formula?

Have I left it very late regarding bottles?  Worried that he should not be having his milk in a bottle at all now.  If that is the case how do I wean him off it?  He is an angel baby but think hes really going to dislike not having his am and pm milk in a bottle.

Dont normally do the stress thing, but am now for some reason!
Thanks.

I hope you don't mind, I am going to pop this over to Eating for Toddlers  :-*

At this age they should be having 20oz per day, but that does not have to include just milk as a drink.  It can include milk in cereal, custards, cheeses, yogurts etc.  So would aim to have milk with meals.

Ideally you want your lo to be on Cows milk at this age as their milk becomes a drink now, and not a meal.  My DD is the same, she gave me the worst look ever when I stuck cows milk into her bottle.

I would suggest mixing the cows milk into the formula and introducing it slowly.  So if you do a 7 oz bottle, start off with 6oz formula, 1 oz milk, and do more milk and less formula every few days to see how your lo goes.

Perhaps try offering the milk in a sippy cup with meals, and then when the meal is finished, you can pour the rest into a bottle and offer the rest after the meal.  This way you are teaching your lo to drink milk from a cup, and as he gets used to it, he will start drinking more and more from the cup.

It is up to you.  It is not completely necessary to get rid of the bottle at exactly 1 years of age.
