Pear was one of the first foods here. Make sure they're very ripe or steam them for ease. Others are banana, sleamed apple, peas, potatoes(still a favorite) We held of on carrots though as they can contains nitrates. The only thing though is that DD never really started solids until around 8mo. She was just having a few bits and that was it. She really had no interest before then, we just went ahead and gave whatever we were having since we have no allergies in either family.
Good luck!

My most successful early foods were toast fingers and rice cakes. He has never really taken to feeding himself anthing that is too slimy or squashy - he would rather fling those things on the floor at the moment.

I do use some purees too though (I need to use fruit puree to hide medication in!!) but in the main part he spoon refuses anyway  :P.

Am thinking of coming over to the BLW side! My LO will happily take breakfast from a spoon but lunch and tea are much more difficult! So I've been offering finger foods like rice cakes and toast and he seems much happier with them, even polished off the last of my hummus tub today. Ive got a load of veggies in the cupboard and was thinking of roasting them all up and offering them as finger foods - any advice, good idea/bad idea? I'm struggling for food ideas but since there are only about 2 varieties of ready made puree that he will eat at the moment - I need to make my like easier.  We have pasta and bolognase tonight - could I offer him some of that for his lunch tomorrow or should I just stick to veg sticks?
Hope you can help

DD was never crazy for purees. So she'a always had what we have. Pasta and bolognase sounds good. I always found any pasta dishes to be a success here.
BLW is great, you don't have to make special meals just for baby. So much easier. The only time where I have a hard time is if we have take out foods that are to high in sodium or fat, I'll make a toast with apple butter, or cheese and crackers with a slivers of soft fruits. Or look in the fridge if we have some leftover from the day before.

So if there are no allergies in your families, go ahead and give what you want. BLW has a website as well, I've learned a lot from there to.

Still really struggling with weaning here at 10 months. Good days and bad days. J often refuses a spoon, but doesn't eat that much himself either. He is interested and CAN eat things, but I just can't seem to convert this into a solids diet.

Currently he eats toast, banana, blueberries, fruit bread, breadsticks. Oh, and anything sweet he can grab out of my hands. And a few mouthfuls of a select few purees - but no more really.

I just wondered how long it took your los to really 'get it' and start eating properly. I am more than happy to drop all purees, if only he would eat some of it. I could give a few mouthfuls of fruit or yoghurt to hid medication in.

Is it normal to still not really understand food at 10 months?

I'm curious as well on how long most have shown real interest in EATING food and not just play with it. She does eat some but most is squished, or on the floor. I see lots of funny faces as well, as she put something in her mouth.

Hi Ladies,

DS is 6mths and 1 week and we've just started weaning (BLW) in the past 3 days.  So far he has tried pear, bananna and broccolli.  He seems to be really enjoying the food but we are cheating a little bit as he is struggling to pick things up and get them to his mouth without breaking the chips ie the pear - so I've been putting a chip size piece in his hand and he immediately brings it to his mouth, in fact once he has bitten the top piece off (and can't get at the rest thats in his fist) he starts yelling until you give him another piece!  I've actually stopped him when he appeared to be still yelling/crying for more for the past couple of meals as I didn't want to overdo it.

I put him in the highchair everyday when his big sister was eating for a week/two before we started weaning to get him used to it but since his first taste, the minute he is put in the highchair he starts yelling until he gets some food (I did mention he's a boy did I?).  He's exactly the same with bfeeding, the minute I sit him on my lap while I'm fixing my top he starts crying and when he finishes one side, as I switch him he starts crying and getting agressive again (but is a complete laid back sweetheart at most other times).  How can I teach this boy some manners!

I'm a bit confused as to how to get a piece of veg cooked soft enough so that he can mush it in his mouth but not so soft that it breaks as he picks it up.  How did anyone else get on with this?

Sounds like you are doing great  :) :).

As for manners - far too early!! - but great to have a lo who appreciates the good food his mummy gives him  :P.

I don't think you are cheating as long as he holds it and takes it to his mouth himself. I used to hand things to DS at that age.

With veg I would just cook it to soft but not mush. He will learn soon enough how to deal with it in his mouth. As long as his gums can 'chew' it he would be fine. So not al dente - but how you would for your Grandparents.

Hi gals, just joining in, was directed here by the mods on the solids board.  Trying to wean Finn...he's 6 months and our paed is all for BLW and has directed us to give Finn whatever we are having or whatever he likes the look of.

Trouble is...DH and I don't eat proper meals together.  He gets home from work and grabs a couple of sandwiches and I pretty much eat a wrap or a salad most nights.  We really don't cook...and never have done much.  Weekends we often do something interesting but not during the week.  And when I go back to work...forget it.

How do you do BLW in this case?  Do you make the veg sticks and stuff for your LO and then just eat what you would normally eat at the table together?  I am not a good cook and really not creative and both DH and I are picky eaters, sadly.  But I am happy to steam up stuff for Finn to try...and I do like a lot more fruit and veg than DH does.  Will it confuse him if we do that because we are not all eating the same meals?

I have started with purees because he really has not got that swallowing thing going on.  He pushes everything out still at 6 months.  He has reflux and his formula is thickened with rice cereal since 4.5 months.  He has all of a sudden dropped his formula consumption in half...he was taking 4x 7 - 8 oz bottles a day and now he takes the equivalent of 3 bottles or 16 - 20 oz if we are lucky.  I thought maybe the starting solids was affecting it and tried to cut back the rice cereal in the bottles but he started pulling off the bottle again and spitting up with a vengeance.

He's a good size for his age...20 pounds (9.5 kilos) and the paed wants me to stop focusing on 'the number' as far as formula goes.  We have agreed to check in on a monthly basis to ensure he is still gaining and not losing out on precious calories.

So far I have tried giving him Nutrios, mum-mums, banana, blueberry (squashed) - he just gags, chokes and gets very red and upset.  He cries and I feel bad.  I want to encourage him to take things but he doesn't even really notice they are on his tray.  He doesn't have a pincer grip so he doesn't even try to pick them up.  He shows no interest in what I am eating really.

Is it too early...are my expectations too high...I guess I feel some pressure to get him eating because the paed said since we now wait until 6 months it's kind of like we need to 'get on it'.  I am trying but I don't want to push him if he's not ready...?
The tweaking never stops!

Hi ladies going to join in here! Elli is 10 months and I have started formula to replace a few BF because she's sooooo distracted, and we are onto about 3 meals a day, some better, some worse.

Wendy - I just talked to our doctor and she told me not to stress at all about solids first, and liquids because our babies won't starve themselves ;) I suppose just keep trying. Could you do rice with formula (or bm?) and get good at that as far as swallowing and then move on from there? That's a taste he knows...

Hi Everyone,
I'm in Canada and really want to do BLW but it really isn't very popular here at all. I've ordered the book, but it hasn't come yet so I am still pretty ignorant. My LO is EBF and we tried cereal a bit, but she doesn't seem to like it much and started refusing the spoon. So I took a break (she is just turning 6 mos this week) and we're going to try BLW I think. Going to read through some of the back posts and I'm sure I'll be back to post questions!

Thanks!

Ok, I already have a question! We have no allergies in our family and have introduced rice, oatmeal, pears and peaches with absolutely no negative reactions. Doing BLW, are you really cautious about introducing new foods - they usually recommend only introducing new foods every couple of days with purrees. Just curious, because in my typical way, I'm ready to go to the kitchen and cook up veggies and just go for it...

Hi all you BLW pros.  My LO is nearly 7mths, doing BLW,BF and we are doing DF of 9-10 oz of EBM at 11pm .  Appreciate that he isn't taking as much solids as a spoonfed baby at the moment so any advice about when I start scaling back the DF?  He sleeps till 6.30 and I'm not keen to loose this.   Just found this forum so can't wait to check out recipes

If there are no allergies in either families, you can give anything you like. For the first foods it's best if they are very soft like banana, avocado, steamed veggies & fruits. As far as baby cereal, DD never really liked it so we stopped giving.

Don't push solids, they'll eat when ready. DD really didn't eat until about 8months, she just played with food, and was off and on food by choice till about 1yr. We're now on 3 meals and the occasional snack and still bf 3-4x per day.

Good luck

Hi
My LO started BLW at six months old. She's 13 months old now and LOVES food! We never introduced one food at a time over days we just went for it.  The only food she has ever turned her nose up at is hard boiled eggs! Can't figure it? Some people say it might be the texture but she's eaten liver (vomitous yuk, DH had to feed her that) and mushrooms (more slimy vomitous muck) without so much as batting an eyelid!!!
We don't have any allergies in our family so never felt concerned.  Now she is older her poo contains less obvious food contents. For the first few months you always new what she had eaten the day before, or even that morning! There are only a few things that come out in the same form and they are grapes and dried apricots so we only give those occasionally just in case they are upsetting her tummy.
Good luck and enjoy cooking. There is nothing nicer (and easier) than watching your LO eat what you eat whilst most people are sat there painstakingly spoon feeding away!
