Good breakfast for DD with constipation?
« on: November 05, 2008, 21:07:29 pm »
My 15 month DD has had constipation for the last few Weeks has plenty of fruit, water and veg-loads of fruit seem to manage it for a day or two-and it comes back-I am constantly making a big effort to try to keep it under control but it keeps coming back. Throughout the day she gets lots of fruit and veg, jut wondering what would be a good breakfast to help. Heard wheetabix can absorb fluid and may not help-is this so? I was giving her shredded wheat, porridge, wheetabix or ready brek-any suggestions or advice appreciated?

SOmetimes when ds gets plugged up, I give him a mixture of applesauce, prunes and apricots.  Blueberries also works great with him.

My daughter loves porridge, so I add about 1/2 tbsp of ground flax seed to the porridge.  It does have to say "ground" flax seed in order for it to work.  Plus it provides a healthy fat/oil.

I make my DD baked beans as she loves them. I also make her rice pudding with 3/4 orange juice and a 1/4 milk and add prunes and dried apricots, this is usually for after dinner but could be for breakfast. The very best thing that works for my DD is an extra active day, nothing beats that, she will usually poo at playgroup while running around outside. I'm a bit worried about the weetabix thing as this is my DD's new favoiurite thing and I was hoping it would help  :-\

Thanks-lots of good suggestions there-Looked I two supermarkets and couldn't find prune juice-is it generally widely available?
DD LOVES baked beans so I am already using those!
Anyway thanks again-will add a few of those things to my shopping list!

I have bought fresh prunes (without the stones) and you just boil them. You can then use the puree with cereal or use the juice mixed with some water for a drink.

You get them in the supermarket either with the fruit and veg or you can also buy a packet in the cake / baking isle!

Hope you find them

Kiwifruit are the winner in our house.  I've also seen them used in hospitals to help with medication induced constipation.

I get constipation and too much fruit will gripe me and I get severe wind that is really painful.  Try more fluids, that works for me.  Plenty of water all the time.

Thanks for the new replies since my last post..DD loves kiwis...when it was bad though she had LOADS of fruit and it didn't help for a while and maybe it was too much fruit. Your right Mari was making sure I got lots of fluids into her.

Our DD also has the same problem. I second the suggestion of lots of fluids, although our doctor told us that milk can be very constipating, so try extra juice (pear juice is especially good for us; we find it in with the baby foods) and water throughout the day (DD will drink more water if there is an ice cube or two in her cup). If you increase the amount of fibre in your diet, you need to also increase the amount of fluids to help move things along.

I personally limit the juice to breakfast time only due to the sugar content, max 4 or 5 oz (usually diluted, unless she is really constipated). We have just recently started giving undiluted juice (DD is 24mo). I also find that raisins, although they are fruit, are very constipating for our DD due to their high iron content, I guess. I was putting raisins on her whole wheat & fibre cereal in the morning and wondering why she was getting more and more constipated. When I cut out the raisins, things worked quite well.

We still buy the baby prunes (pureed) found in the baby food aisle of our supermarket. Our DD loves them, and they work really well. Not sure what I'll use when she doesn't want to eat "baby" food anymore!!

Good luck!
