the power of breastmilk and chicken pox?
« on: November 19, 2008, 15:49:59 pm »
Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows whether my 9 month old dd2 will have a smaller chance of getting chicken pox because she is breastfed now that dd1 is covered in them at the moment? I really dont want her to get it but if she does i suppose it will be gone by christmas right? I have had a very mild form of it when i was a child and hopefully i will be passing some protection on to dd2? Anyone has any experience with this? My friend was told by her gp that babies under one are not susceptible to it, only to find that her 3 month old got it excactly two weeks after his sister had it.

Thanks!

Sorry but no.  breastfeeding doesn't make a difference to a child's resistence to chicken pox.  emma (samuel'smum) and i have personal experience with our nursing daughters getting nasty chicken pox despite our own immunity...

oh dear, ah well, lets see what happens, thinking two weeks from now dd2 will have it too. At least it will be over and done with I suppose.

Thanks!

ANOTHER excuse to show my exclusively breastfed daughter! ;D

(I had it when I was 12 but it was also fairly mild - maybe that is the key thing?)

I love that picture Emma!  The last time I saw it was when I started a very similar thread to this - Mae had a "blister" on her bum and I thought "surely she can't have chicken pox because I've already had them... lol"!

I don't think it's even that, I had a bad dose when I was about 9 and Shay still got them. Two weeks after seeing my nephew out they came. Although he wasn't still BF then but he was under 1yr maybe if he was still BF it wouldn't have been so bad :-\

Oscar was vaccinated and had a nasty reaction to either the chickenpox live virus or the measles part of the MMR (got them both at the same time).

I had both measles and chickenpox really badly as a kid and the docs said the antibodies in my milk were "trying" (but in vain) to fight with the live virus vaccines!!!!

So even though he prob won't catch chickenpox now he had a bad temp and a rash for about a week anyway!!! Oh, that was at 13 mths and we were on about 3 feeds a day at that stage!

Bless her heart!  Hope it's an easy case for both your bubs.  She's still cute, regardless.  :)  And likes to gnaw that finger!  ;)
