When did your lo stop putting things into mouth?
« on: November 20, 2008, 21:07:18 pm »
It was cute and tolerable at first but now it is getting to be a little annoying.  DS is 17 mos and is constantly putting something into his mouth.  DD did this so I wasn't too surprised but she stopped by 14 mos.  DS is still going strong.  His current favorite chewing items are paper and pebbles.  He doesn't swallow them and will give them to me when I ask.  He is teething so I have given apples, fruits or even a toothbrush but he will go back to the paper or pebbles.

Anyone with a toddler like this?

DS is 22m and  still puts stuff in his mouth, but probably not so much as he used to do.  His favourite today was the tag on his zipper!!  He'll also pick stuff up off the floor and shove it in.  I'm just assuming he'll get bored of it at some point! :)

22 mos, eh?  Oh well...the other day, I keep picturing him as a tobacco chewer when he's older.

If DS is watching a cartoon or something, sometimes "something" will creep into his mouth (ie//car, tag, sleeve)...but it's usually not a conscious choice....DD on the other hand, only puts things in her mouth if she's testing it out...like oh, what's this...oops, not for eating...iykwim?

I think it's the individual child too, and how they go about with their sensory perception....

My ds still puts things in his mouth, not as much as when he was younger, but still puts crayons, buttons, etc in his mouth.

Masyn is 26 months and still puts stuff in her mouth, sometimes its just an attention grab though, she really knows better! (but then I catch my husband aimlessly chewing the tv remote.....so maybe it's genetic!)

I think it varies hugely....  Katie stopped putting things into her mouth all the time when she was about 16 months I think - but then she was never one for needing to suck or play with things in her mouth a lot

And of course many adults (nailbiters etc) still do it!

Leorah is 26 months and still puts a lot of stuff in her mouth, I thought she'd have grown out of it by now and she is better but apparantly this goes on until 3!! She likes to look, feel and taste everything and will tasted things sneakily by turning around or beding down so I have to be vigilant when she is picking berries of bushes  ::) Mimi, Leorah loved pebbles and once had a snail in her mouth  :-X

A snail?  Ewwww.  I once caught ds putting a ladybug into his mouth.  Thank goodness dd told me as the ladybug was her "pet of the month".  I was told that it's a good thing as it will build up his immune system.
