Should I switch to Nutramigen before paed appointment? (UK)
« on: November 22, 2008, 07:42:39 am »
Hello lovely ladies!

As some of you know from my rash pictures of my son we are pretty sure he's got a milk allergy.   My GP is an old stuffy codger who admitted he knows nothing about this and has put in a referral to a paed GI.  It will likely take 2 weeks minimum. Inthe meantime he's given us soy formula.

On the soy DS's tummy rumbling and "bottom wind" has pretty much disappeared, and he no longer screams hysterically with every feed. In fact, feeding is a whole different game!  :)

However, his face rash is getting worse, if possible, and we are noticing some really painful looking raw patches on his neck.  His cheeks are now so red and sandpaperey that we feel the skin is going to start to crack any minute.  I am obviously worried that he's allergic to soy as well, and that his reactions are going to get increasingly worse.

Although insaneley expensive (13 pounds for 400g) I am pretty sure I can get Nutramigen on my own. My local pharmacist knows the situation and I don't *think* that Nutramigen requires a prescription.  (Weston's Online pharmacy will send it to me, anyway).

Would it be horribly wrong of me to stop the soy after just these few days and put him on Nutrmigen on my own?   Before I see the paed?  In my mind, if by the time we get to the paed DS is clear and better, it should prove that he does have an allergy and we need Nutramigen.  Obviously what I am worried about is that if he does clear up, the paed will say he can't make a diagnosis based simply on my photographs, or that we need to stop the Nutramigen and put hmi backomn milk or soy and come back in a couple of weeks. Or, that we will end up having to pay for the Nutramigen on our own for the next 9 months.  We can buy a few tins of it to get us through until the appointment, but I can't be spending 40 quid a week on formula.

What do any of you think? Any thoughts?

Personally I think Nutramigen is better than Soy.  I know a lot of Peds recommend a hypoallergenic formula over a soy formula.

That being said, I totally understand about not wanting to have to pay for it, if you don't.  Here in the US, we have to pay for it.  Some Insurance's will cover it, but very rarely.

If it was me, I would take my chances and put him on Nutramigen.

I think if the doctor has an sense at all, he could see from the pictures and most important, your observation and seeing what cleared your child up.

I never did see the pics.  Would you mind posting them here?

I recommend Nutramigen 100%.

Oh Mashimaro!! I'm so sorry that your lo's rash is getting worse!  Just a thought, could he be sensitive to detergent or something that is rubbing up against his face?????  A stuffed animal, blanket?

How long have you been trying the soy?  I know that just as I was ready to pull DD off soy because I thought it was not working, her system got adjusted and has been fine ever since.  I think it took a entire 7 days.  Only reason I ask is because I would hate to keep switching up formulas so quickly on them!

Is there a way to find out who the Ped is?  I would call you gp first to find out if they sent the request out to the other docs.  Tell them you situation and how bad it has gotten since going to soy.  If they already sent the referral to the ped, then perhaps it's just taking time for them to contact you.  I would, Monday morning, call the gp, then call the Ped and explain the situation.

Similar thing happened to me in the middle of switching docs.  My first appt was already made, but then my son had a sever reaction and they got me in that same day as his reaction.  They didn't even have his files yet, but they just called my old doc after I left to get them faxed over.

If this all fails and you can't get anywhere with the docs I would try the Nutrimigen and take lots of good pics of your poor baby's face beforehand.

I am with Wendy. I did the same. We knew DS had MPI as his reflux settled down greatly on my elimination diet. I was also told though, when we weaned, that I need him to be trialed on a CMF and go from there. i bough the nutramigen off Ebay and after 2 on the CMF I knew we needed to swap. He had a rash, was +++ Cranky and had diarrhoea. So we changed and all was MUCH better.

Personally I do not think any doctor will blame you for changing, esp if your son's rash is this severe. 50% of kids with a MPI has a SPI as well. You don't know how long this referral will take and prolonged uncontrolled reflux and gastric irritation can lead to sleeping disorders and feeding aversions.

I would buy the nutramigen or get a GP to prescribe it for you. You can buy it at a pharmacy without a prescription, it is just behind the counter.

Good luck!!

Yeah, I wouldn't wait for days or anything like that.  I wouldn't want to see my baby suffer like that either.  Let us know how it goes. :)
