ANOTHER growth spurt?!
« on: November 25, 2008, 03:06:14 am »
At 6 months DS had a growth spurt, (waking before midnight and feeding twice in the night for a couple of days). I read that the growth spurts are roughly 4,6 and 9 months. As he's already had one at 6 months, could his waking be another spurt at 7 months?

For the last 3 nights he is waking grumpy, and grumpy if I don't feed him and then quite grumpy if i don't offer the second side (one night I wasn't there and DH settled him after an hour).  Yesterday afternoon he still seemed hungry (and fussy) after a feed at 3pm, so I offered solids (not much goes in) and bf fed him again an hour later.

He could be teething (he usually doesn't show obvious grumpiness when teething, and is always chewing on things regardless), but otherwise is easy-going in the day.

I don't think there is a 9mth GS, but Zane was like this with his teeth. The first two that came through weren't that bad BUT...................... well lets just say in the last 11 weeks that about 3 of those have been good :P, waking in the night, grumpy when get up and on and off through the day too.

Have you weighted him lately? This will tell you if hes gaining well but to me it sounds like teeth and maybe just using you to sooth

Hope it soon passes :-*

I haven't weighed him, he'll get weighed at the end of December. Do you mean that he might not be gaining or that because he's gaining he needs more? I will check him out tomorrow on the scales.

If he's using a feed to soothe...  I am always wondering about that balance between food and comfort, but don't want to become a constant boobie feeder!  I can't really remember this time with feeding Rory and comfort...

If its in the short term then i wouldn't worry about it for now if your ok with it.

I mentioned the weigh in more as just clutching for straws really, from memory you've never had weight gain issues and just wanted to see if he was gaining well. But like i said im sure this is not the case :).

How is he today?

I thought there was a 9 month growth spurt - a lot of references say that that's the next one after the 6 month one.

Some do say that every 3 months or so the first year is a growth spurt.

It might be developmental. Josie's sleep in particular would go out the window just before a new skill emerged, whether it was rolling over, standing, walking, new words, putting words together, and of course TEETH would throw us off!

It's always something, or so it seems. :)

that is so right, if only that was just a saying and not a reality LOL

How is he today?

He woke at 2:30 this morning and I thought 'woo-hoo only one waking tonight' but he was up again at 4:30 then up for the day at 6:30.
He is happy enough, he might be constipated, he's grunted a few times while feeding even at 4 am but no 'result'. And then there is always the possibility of teething! He was pretty grumpy getting to sleep this morning, and found him in a completely different spot in his cot. He is a little more actively rolling over now, he could do it before but seems more so yesterday and this morning.

I will weigh him when he wakes. I wonder if my milk is up and down... I worked hard a few weeks ago to get it up again after his illness, pumping and frequent feeding, compressions etc. I can tell when he's getting more than he needs as he posits a lot (always happens when there's lot of milk). He did that for a week after increasing my supply but not since.  I've not had supply issues overall, but perhaps I'm struggling with keeping up with him.  He's a big baby, probably about 9 kilos (almost 20 pound) by now and not taking much solids.

re 9 month growth spurt, I read that one on kellymom site.

I'm getting some help from a dietitian to help me get my food intake right, it swings from not enough to too much (when I feel like I'm starving for several days).

I'm taking it easy today, not getting good sleep as finding it hard to get to sleep then being woken numerous times by everyone else DH, DD, DS then the blurry cat   ::)

AND his top 2 teeth have just emerged!  But last he slept for 11 hours straight, no wake!

His weight is good, he has gone up a kilo in the last month.

LOL

well the 3rd night he woke at 3:30, but he was saturated, so had to change him and resettle with a feed.
the 4th night he was baby-sat and was unsettled, when I came home at 11:30 he was awake, resettled with a feed and woke at 6am.
let's see what the little tacker does tonight   ::)  :)
