Blood Test Results - UPDATE!!!
« on: November 27, 2008, 19:33:32 pm »
Well, the secretary from the Allergy clinic just called.  She didn't really go into detail, just checking up on me, as the Doctor is suppose to be the one calling me with the results.  I did however manage to get this out of her:  She said he did have "Low Levels" of an allergy to the dairy, soy, and beef.  And "High Level" to the Egg.  Of course to still keep him of oats and barley for the FPIES.  She said he will be calling me tomorrow or Friday with more details.  I can't wait!  I really had no idea there were different levels, so I'm really curious about that.

So, my obvious question is, what do low levels mean exactly?  Does that mean he can have it now, or I should still wait, but may not have to wait as long as 5 years or so.  I just want to know now! lol.

Re: Blood Test Results - Question

I found this online, makes sense to me.  For example I had a very small welp from my allergy test for potato's, peanuts and white fish.  The doctor said that he saw no need to avoid these.  I knew something was bothering me, so I avoided potato's, added them back in and it is certain I am major allergic to them.  I ate white fish the other night and I was up all night itching.

Another example, Zach showed positive to Soy, but very low.  He could never handle soy until about 2 yrs old.

So based on his history, any positive would be enough for me to avoid it.

If a specific IgE test is negative, then chances are that you are not allergic to that substance, but a positive test must be evaluated in the context of your clinical history. You can have a low level and still have a severe reaction to actual exposure to the allergen or an elevated level and never experience a reaction. People who outgrow a food allergy may continue to have positive IgE test results for many years.

Oh and also keep in mind he has not had these foods in a very long time either.  May show something different if he ate the foods and then did the test

Well got the full results::

Milk  0.35
Soy  0.35
Beef  0.35
Barley  0.48
Oats  0.60
Wheat  1.20
Egg 5.67

He said that even though the oats and barley were low to continue to stay away from them as he still thinks it's FPIES as well, due to his severe reaction to them.

He said I can try to introduce Milk or Beef.  I am choosing milk, because milk is in everything.  So Monday I will give it a try.  He hasn't had milk product in 5 months, so hopefully it will go well.

So even though it was postitive on the allergy test, because it is so low, he thinks he may handle it okay?

What reaction did he get from egg, I can't remember.

Well, he only tried the egg once.  At that time he only had sweats, eczema, and nasty diarrhea, that was at 12 months.

With the milk, I think because he never had a severe reaction, that he may be able to tolerate it now.  However, if I see ANY sign that something isn't right I'm stopping it.  He never had diarrhea with it, just was hot/sweaty, tired, cranky, eczema.  So we'll see.

From what I gather 0.35 is at the line of low and normal?  Or did I get that wrong?

I am not sure how the blood test are rated.  I am sure they all may be different.

It is just great knowing what he can have now and can't.  I am sure your happy that you at least have the go ahead to try some new foods.

keep up posted on his success!!
