From 20 NW to STTN ... It Honestly Feels Like a Miracle :)
« on: November 28, 2008, 21:47:51 pm »
Wanted to check in quickly with news of continued and ultimate success ...

For everyone out there that is reading and posting on the NW Boards through glazed over, bloodshot, sleepless eyes ... there is hope and it will get better ... I PROMISE YOU :).

I was there not too terribly long ago.  Through countless acts of accidental parenting, I found myself getting up upwards of 20 times per night with our LO at 6 months old.  After almost giving in to CIO, I discovered the Baby Whisperer, the corresponding message boards and the countless words of support from moderators and other posters.

It has taken us five months. Five months of PU/PD until my arms and heart hurt.  Five months of a cranky (yet supportive :)) husband.  Five months worth of doctor's appointments (she must have an ear infection, I just know it!).  Five months of slowly dropping NWs until just those couple remained ... the middle of the night nursing that I was sure she needed ... the 4am snuggle that I assumed would last until she moved out of the house.  Five months of almost getting there, until ...

WE DID GET THERE!  Two weeks ago, Lily dropped her last NW (her last night nursing) on her own and started sleeping through the night.  After the first night, assuming that I had dreamt the whole thing, expectations were low for a repeat.  And then, it happened again.  And again.  And again.  And now it has been two weeks ... TWO WEEKS ... of beautiful, uninterrupted sleep!

I am so proud of my whole family for the work that have put into this.  I am proud of Lily, of my husband, of my mom ... and finally, after almost a whole year as a first time mom, I am proud of myself.  I used to think that there was no better feeling than to lock eyes with those huge, beautiful blue eyes of Lily's.  I have since found an even better feeling ... As I peer down into Lily's crib and watch her sleeping, soundly, happily through the night ... knowing that I helped her "get there," that I successed in instilling such a deep trust, that I taught her to self-soothe, that I never gave up on either of us ... that truly is the best feeling in the world.

Sending everyone thoughts of beautiful, restful sleep (and you will get there!),
Kim

Kim, thanks for posting this, it's very encouraging... I'm in the middle of that sleepless phase you also went through in the past, and it just feels that it'll go on forever! Can I ask what steps you followed? Was PU/PD the main thing you used? Was you LO using any props, or just waking for feeds? Any info on what worked for you would be greatly appreciated, I'm sure us desperate sleep-deprived mummies are eager to hear good advice on what has worked for others!

Kim - thank you so much for posting!!  I've not been around much recently so had lost track of your progress - I never doubted that you would get there, but I am so glad to read your post to hear the outcome!

Bravo!

And what an amazing post.  You've managed to express the feeling I think lots of BWs get when they see their hard work pay off.  No short cuts, lots of work, but SO much pride when it's all over!
