We had our Dermatologist appt. Eczema
« on: December 04, 2008, 01:04:24 am »
Our original appt. was 5 months away, but I kept calling and got in on a cancellation today.

The very first question they asked was, "Has he been allergy tested?"  He was about a year ago and it was negative to everything, but he also was not exposed to many foods at that time.

She said he deft. has KP - Kerotosis Pilaris, BUT that would be more subtle and not so inflammed.  She said what he has is also eczema.

We have an allergist appt. January 8th with a new allergist.

She prescribed a steroid type cream and a really strong antihistamine to make him sleep at night :-)  I hate giving him meds, but he has not been sleeping at all.

She asked if he itched a lot and I said he does itch his hands a lot and is always pulling at his cloths.  We just thought he hated wearing cloths.

So she said not to cut anything out of his diet until we see the allergist, but my gut tells me it is milk and soy related.

Here are some pics of his skin.  Whatca think.

Awww poor little guy!  It's really noticeable on his arms!  His cheeks look like how my sons would start off, then it would eventually become dry, scaly and oozy.  I am SO GLAD that you got in to see a new allergist!  I would do as the doctor said.  When I went to the allergist over a month ago my son's skin was clear.  He kept asking over and over "Well really, how severe was it????"  He didn't understand that to us it was bad, but to him well he's seen a lot worse, and it was hard to explain.  Because of that he kept saying that the eczema was NOT related to the formula, that it was just a coincidence!  Made me mad!  I laugh now, because we got the test result saying he is actually ALLERGIC to milk and soy.

So, in my opinion, to avoid all that mess I would not change his diet if he is NOT suffering really badly.  The other option is to change his diet and hope the pictures can show how bad it really was.  I hope you can get some new info and new tests for your boy.  I bet you want to see this get resolved fast!

Hi Wendy!  I see it is further down on his arms, is that right?  Is it all over?  As you know, I am stumped with Heath's, but would love to follow along.

I guess I should get my buns in gear and go the dr again.  Heath's is getting bumpier on his arms.  His cheeks go through rounds of getting really red and then fading a "little."  It seems though to have spread overall.

Just a side note, I saw a cream sold by Sephora called KP duty.   I don't think it looks baby oriented at all.  I am leary of any products that have phthalates and parabens, however.  Especially for babies.

Hope the mystery is solved soon.  I think I will make a follow up apt tomorrow to see the pedi; she will again tell me to put lotion on it.  When I did that it got worse...

Hi spectra, thanks for the info; I see you just posted also.  I have tried no wheat; however, we were on the same formula since he was 4 mo, I think.  This started after he began eating a lot more solids.  I tried cutting out dairy things other than his formula, and nothing was dramatically different.  How long did it take until it was going away, if you don't mind?

His eczema?  Well he had it all over his cheeks, arms, hands, legs and feet.  And cradle cap badly.  All of it started at bumps then worsened into dry, hard, scaly skin.  Like armour it seemed.  At 10 months I took him of the baby formula and replaced it with Rice milk to see if it made a difference as no Doc's would listen to me.  Within 3 days his face cleared up. After 2 weeks his arms and hands cleared, and by 4 weeks it was all gone.

Oh yeah, like night and day.  He use to be so cranky and seemed so tired all the time.  Always rubbing his eyes from being tired and itchy.  He would cry so much because of the itching and scratching his face to bits.  It was torture to see him suffer like that.  He's now such a happy baby.  Smiles and laughs all the time.  I love it!

Tyler seems so tired all the time too.  He is always rubbing at his eyes and of course everyone knows how cranky he is.

I was doing milk/soy free for a week and I saw a huge improvement.  Then he went to my sister's and she feed him milk and he came home with a face full of rash.  I then took him to the GI doctor last week and he felt it was MSPI, so I avoided all dairy and soy again and DH is not supportive, so yesterday I said the hell with it all and I give up, I can't do this a lone.  Between yesterday and today his face has gotten worse.

So.. I know for almost certain it is milk and soy.  Part of me wants to cut it out 100% for 2 full weeks and make sure I am the ONLY one preparing all his meals and see if I see an improvement.  Then introduce it back about 1 week before his appoitment and see what happens.

Are you thinking rice milk?  What else will you feed instead?

Oh we are already on rice milk.  We tried Lactose Free Whole milk about 2 months ago and he woke up every morning covered in poop.

Wendy, that sounds like a good idea.  I'd hate to see him and your family suffer over the Christmas holidays.  I'd probably do the same thing if I was in your situation.

Hi!  How is it going Wendy?  Any new results?

I was to the pedi, and she again said kp.  I have been slathering it with lotion, which has helped.  It still gets more red during the day, and the bumps are still there.  The bumps just seem a little smaller.  She suggested a couple of creams: Aquaphor or Eucerin.  I had a small tube of Aquaphor, so have been applying that before we go outside.  It is petroleum jelly based, it seems from the ingredients.  So, not much has changed here, but it is a little better.

We use the aquaphor also.  I put it on morning and night.  He skin does seem smoother.  The steriod cream seemed to help with the inflammation.

Gotta run...

I forgot to mention she also suggested a hydrocortisone cream.  Actaually less bumpy today.  Hope it continues!

Hey...  Sorry about having to get off so quickly.

His skin actually looks great now.  We did about 5 days of the liquid antihistimine and steriod cream.  The hydrocordizone cream, never really helped him.

Since changing cloths detergent to All Clear, no fragrance, etc.  I re-washed everything in it, it seems to have gotten better.  Just so hard to tell.  Could be the weather also, it has been really warm and humid here in the middle of December.

Really though, his face is smooth now, his arms are a little dry, but not bumpy.

Hey... Maybe he was allergic to the rice milk :-0  Since starting him on whole milk it went away.. Weird...

Terrific news it is gone!  Wonder if it could have been the rice milk?  Have you been off the cream and antihistimine for a few days?  If those remedies took care of it, is it KP or something else?

Back to bumpier today???  I can't figure it out...  I haven't tried the hydrocortisone.  I have a tube, but just misplaced it about 3 days ago, lol.  I cleaned out all our old meds and found a tube of it; now where did I put it?  Once we had Heath, I changed to fragrance free 7th gen detergent for all of us.  Then we could wash all of ours together.

His is not gone, but way less inflammed looking.  I really don't know...

I am still going to the allergist Jan. 9th though.

Curious to see how things continue.  Interested to hear what the dermatologist thinks.  Hope that it goes away; but if it is going to be recurring, it is better that it is there for the apt.  lol

Love the photo, btw!

Ha.. yeah Tyler was knocking down the camera as it was taking it... we just jumped in the view and this is what we got.

Yeah I am going to keep the allergist appt.  So hard to get in and just see what they have to say.

Good idea to keep it; even if it is gone, perhaps they can say if there is any likelihood that it was related to rice milk or anything else.

You both are so quick to get in the photo, and look great on top of it, lol.
