She has started biting...
« on: December 06, 2008, 20:34:17 pm »
Not just biting, clamping down on my nipple and then pulling her head back so it pulls and pings out.  I can't tell you how painful it is.  My DD is 10 months old and only breast fed and I don't have the option of giving her formula (due to allergies) so have no choice but to breast feed.  She only does it at the evening feed when we are getting ready for bed but it hurts so much I get to the point where I can't feed her any more.  I am stuck.  I've tried saying "no" loudly and putting her down but she just laughs and giggles and rolls around and goes for it again.  Can any one help or give me any advice??  I end up in tears as, as well as hurting, it emotionally hard.  I used to love our bed time feed but now I'm just getting so nervous.

No it's right from the start.  Sometimes if I swap boobs she stops and continues to feed

if it's just the evening feed then maybe its a supply issue or maybe just behavioural? Hard to say...How many times a day are you feeding and what is she eating/drinking otherwise?

My LO only did it twice, plus a couple of nips...but I know how painful it is.  It was painful to nurse that side for the next couple of days even without him bighting it again so I can only imagine.  My LO also has allergies so I get the concern of "what to do if he can't nurse?".  Could it possibly be teething?  Regardless of whether its behavioural or not my understanding is obviously being very consistent, every time she bites it's a quick pull away and a sharp no.  If it's teething make sure she has stuff to bite on, and provide stuff to sooth her gums.

If it continues and you decide you can't nurse anymore I believe that a recipe exists on the allergy site for how to fatten up rice milk.

It's not supply and it's not teething...She has a boob at 7am, around 11-11.30, somewhere between 3-4 and then bed time.  She has solids at 8.30, 12.30-1 and 5 where she has water to drink.  She has nipped me a few times over the months, but nothing like this.  When she has done it in the past I have taken her off the boob and said "no" and laid her down next to me and that always worked.  But this is different, its not just a little nip, she clamps down with her teeth and then pulls back.  I think she likes the reaction it gets too as she always laughs and giggles at me shouting or screaming and putting her down.  Also since posting the first time she starting biting me generally.  Yesterday morning she bit my cheek and neck in the same way.  Had a terrible time with it last night again, but distracted her with a toy and put her on the other boob which seems to work.
