When do you change from sleeping bag to blankets or duvet?
« on: December 07, 2008, 13:32:55 pm »
Katie has been in a sleeping bag (Grobag or similar) since she was about 5 months old - and has been very happy - but the current size we have is getting a bit small....

Was wondering whether to go for the bigger size up, or whether it's not worth it if she will be in blankets / duvet soon... wondered what time other people changed?

I am in no hurry to move her into a Big girl bed - she is very happy in her cot and is very petite so is in no danger of climbing out (fingers crossed....) so this will be for use in the cot

I left Lliy in sleeping bag until we moved to bgb at 2yrs old.  I think having grown up pillow and duvet etc can help with transition to bgb.  If she is staying in cot for some time longer, personally I'd leave her in sleeping bag.  Another thing to consider is the fact its winter and sleeping bags are much more cosy and she can't kick it off in night then wake up cold.

Grobag until moving into a BBB.  I'm not sure about having a duvet etc in a cot with 4 sides, Andrew is still such a wriggler that i'd be worried that he's get under it, whereas in a BBB the duvet would fall out of bed.

A larger size grobag is on my Xmas list for him in the warmer tog to hope keep going until he's ready for BBB in the summer.

Would go with the grobag. DD moved to a bed and duvet at 2 years 8 months only cos we needed the cot, she never looked to move from it or to give up the grobag. Going to use it as long as poss with ds too.

Thanks all!  Looks like I need to be looking for the next size of Grobag in the January sales then...!  That's fine with me - she's very happy in the sleeping bag ....

we still use the grobag....even in the BBB!!! We do BBB for naps and cot for night sleep still.... Oscar ADORES his, also in them since around 4 mths.....I have two 18 to 36 mth sized 0.5 tog and I just put him in one of those fleecy sleepers now that its colder under this.....I don't think I'll be buying the age 3-6 (but they do them in the states for sure as I've heard Stacy talk about them for Kaleb.....not sure whether he's out of his yet) as I am hoping to get to train Oscar nighttime over the next few months.....

for us, the grobag prevented O from climbing out of the cot before we were ready for the BBB transition. He is tall and spirited and was able to escape from playpen or cot at 20 mths without the grobag on but still cannot at this stage around 102 or 103cm tall while in the bag....

if its not broken then don't try to fix it, just go up a size is what I would recommend!!!

good luck!

we still use a sleeping bag at night. my MIL made it out of fuzzy fleece with trucks and bought extra, so we can make it longer when needed. cost us a bit less than the grobags he's had since he was 4 months old.
ryan can actually get out of his, i think the buttons aren't as strong, but then i just stick him back in it when i go to bed. yesterday i went to bed and heard him whimpering half asleep saying that he's cold. well, don't get out of the bed then, i just say...
i really don't know what to do in the future. he just won't stay under a blanket...

getting themselves out can be a decider in when to switch to duvet/blankets.  Lily had a zip one with buttons at shoulders, she totally mastered the buttons first then she conquered the zip, so it became a game putting her back in, kept me in the room longer I guess, so another good reason to make the switch.

Bryony, funny you should ask!  I've been wondering exactly the same thing for Callum!  He's started being able to escape from his now, but only in the morning when he wakes up.  He still wriggles like crazy and we have a nightmare putting him to bed for his naps under a blanket, so I dread to think what would happen at night!  There's still quite a lot of space in the bottom of our up to 18m bags (ROFL!) so think we've got a bit of time to decide yet!

If you're worried about how to keep the duvet on the bed when you switch, Grobag have come up with a really clever idea - they got a duvet that zips on to the sheet. HAve a look at this link http://www.grobag.com/firstduvet.aspx. Not sure the price but I think that's really clever!!

we stayed with the grobags until she grew so tall that she needed the ones for 3yrs+ (she was just 2).  at that point we decided we would move to a duvet simply because of the cost.  I was amazed how easy the transition was, in fact she sleeps better because she can kick it off if she's hot ad pull it on if she's cold.

Ok when dd conquered the zip, I just turned the grobag inside out and zipped it up like that, she never figured that one out .
