To Wean or Not To Wean
« on: December 08, 2008, 22:06:14 pm »
My daughter is 11 months and still breastfeeding.  I have absolutely no problem with breastfeeding but I am now thoroughly fed up of being overweight.  I am about 3 stone off my ideal weight and desperate to get rid of it.  Unfortunately, I find losing weight really difficult and in the past have needed to go on a very strict diet and exercise regularly.  One without the other just doesn't work for me.

I'm not in a rush to give it up but I know it's not good to diet whilst feeding, and I know that exercise affects the taste of breastmilk.  I am so tired of feeling wobbly and horrible and wearing maternity clothes but it feels very selfish to give up just so I can feel better about myself.  Any ideas on how I can lose the weight without giving up b/f?

Also, how many feeds should they have at this age?  At the moment she has 4 - morning, mid-morning, mid-afternoon and bedtime and a bottle when she wakes in the middle of the night (so DH can feed her).  I asked my Health Visitor but she just said 'that sounds fine'.

Why don't you just start out slowly by adding 30 min 3 times a week of cardio or something. I've never heard of exercise affecting breastmilk. If you eat healthy and are getting exercise I don't see how this could be anything but good for your baby. As for how many feeds, I think my son was only getting 2 feeds by that time. One in the morning and one before bed. You could also start introducing homo milk soon too.

Exercising only affects the acidity level of breast milk (and as such the taste) directly after exercising so as long as you finish exercising 1hr before the feed, you'll be fine.

Also, there are plenty of diets that are 100% compatible with breast feeding.  I'm following Slimming World's plan and that's working for me.  Weight Watchers also have a plan suitable for breast feeding mothers...

Hugs honey - don't give up breast feeding if you're not ready - you can do both together and failing that, you have your whole life to lose weight - this special time with your DD won't last long...

Agreed.  I think around a year they can go more toward 2 feeds per day, but if you like feeding and dd keeps drinking, keep burning the extra calories!!!  ;D  Also, Nicky, I am sooooo with you...  I am thoroughly fed up with being overweight too!  I can exercise all I want, but I'm just always hungry!  Although, I admit, I'm not exercising as much as I should be :-[.  I'm just gonna do a bit of cardio and try to keep my arms unfloppy with weights, but wait until ds is weaned to get down to the nitty gritty.  After all, our lo's will only be tiny and need the mama cow for a little while!  *Walks away grumbling*  grudhgph...  but I still hate being wobbly... aufhghdugh...  I don't fit in my clothes...  grumble, grumble...    Hope it helps to know you're not alone.  :-* ;)
