Restless nites cause of too long naps?
« on: December 14, 2008, 10:06:51 am »
My dd (7mths) is a good sleeper, but lately she's been restless at nite and wakes up constantly. Two nites ago, she napped at 10am to 12. Then she napped again at 2am (try to keep her longer but when she's had crap nite has knock on effect) till 5:30. She then was awake till 10pm  :o. She fell asleep and I went to lay her down in her cot and she was restless and kept crying. I went to make her a bottle and she took it and fell asleep till about 11:30. Then she woke up again, and started playing and babbling!!! I pulled the duvet over my head to sleep lol. I woke up at 5am realizing she mustve fallen asleep by herslelf again, but I dunno what time.

Yesterday, I tried a different trick. I let her nap from 12pm to 2pm, two hours only, and if she was gonna sleep again, I decided I'll wake her again after 2 hours. But she fell asleep at 6pm only and woke after 15 min as she was with me in the lounge and ds woke her up making noise. She stayed awake till 9pm (late, I know)and then I laid her down (she is great and settles herself without any crying or anything) and she fell asleep, and woke once moaning in the am, and then at 5am (dh gets up at that time and usually makes a bottle)had her bottle and then slept till around 7:45am, but again, a bit restless. But nonetheless, she slept much better than previous night.
Im trying to get routine, but with toddler its tough. How many hours roughly should she be sleeping at nite? I've tried putting her down earlier, but she'll wake up again (down at 8pm, wake again at 10pm)and wont sleep, hence the reason I now put her down later and she usually sleeps thru. She's quite happy in the day and stays awake between 3 to 4 hours at a time.

It's hard to get on a consistent routine when you have 2 kids BUT napping a different times and for diff lengths of times will def have an effect on nightsleep I would have thought. So if it were me I would aim to hve 2 naps (not sure if you do a catnap) for approx 1.5 hrs each and then into bed earlier. I wouldn't really offer a nap at 5 or 6 pm as it is inevitable that LO will not be tired enough for bed time , KWIM?

Hmm, well according tho that link, dd is sleeping enough. She sleeps 2 hours at a time, usually twice a day, and just makes the 10 hour sleep at night. Gotta work on that one...
