MSPI and Reflux Questions
« on: December 15, 2008, 04:03:13 am »
My dd (7weeks) was diagnosed MSPI last week.  I'm excl bfing and have eliminated all dairy and soy from my diet.  However, I'm noticing signs that I might think is related to reflux like crying and pulling off about 5 minutes into a feed, loud rumbling in her stomach, arching her back, and not finishing a bfing session b/c of pain when she's clearly still hungry and I clearly still have milk.

I'm hesitant about any kind of medications, though.  Does anyone know about any long term effects of reflux meds?  She only sleeps about 30 minutes for naps (and is clearly still tired) and often wakes up once or twice during that time.  I thought, prior to finding out about her MSPI, that she was just a terrible sleeper but now I'm wondering if its not related to her MSPI and/or reflux.

Should I call her Dr and talk to her about my suspicions?  I have an appt for her 2 mos check up in three weeks but I don't want to wait that long if there's something that could make my lo feel better now.

Her symptoms do sound refluxy so it would be worth getting it checked out. MSPI can be a cause of reflux and it can take over 2 weeks for all the protiens to get out of her and your system and for her to start feeling better. Have you eliminated all the hidden traces of dairy and soy too? It's a difficult call on the meds as some can take up to 2 weeks to get to full effect, by which time you should be seeing an improvement if the MSPI is causing it - and then you wouldn't really know what was working :-\

If you can ride it out until her next appointment you would probably have a better idea of what is going on. It is worth making sure her cot is raised at night and even go to feeding when she is sleepy in the meantime to keep her milk intake up - you can work on routine when things are under control.

HTH!

I agree with PP.  She may still be showing signs of reflux becuase of MSPI.  Have you eliminated all hidden sources?
