The attack of the 45 minute nap.....
« on: December 21, 2008, 18:24:08 pm »
Hi,

I'll try to keep this short, I am getting really confused by my LO's short napping lately....so here goes:

Spencer is almost 5 months old now, I started EASY from day one and at 3 weeks I moved her from my bed to the crib and taught her to self soothe using shh/pat. It took 3 weeks, but it worked! She goes down for all naps and bedtime without much fuss and on her own. Until the last two weeks she had been sleeping 12 hours at night and having 3 naps a day (2h, 1.5h, 45-1h) usually about 4-5 hours total. She is swaddled, has never used a paci and has a blacked out room with white noise. We rarely hear a peep from her at night, and if we do, she settles back down by herself.

The problem is that in the last two weeks she has started taking only 45 minute naps!!! (is on a 4h EASY) I have tried to leave her to go back to sleep, done shh/pat again (limited success), and resorted to holding her while doing shh/pat (doesn't work well either!). I can't think of what it could be...it's not a growth spurt, as she sleeps through the night, she knows how to settle and self soothe.

It is worth mentioning that she is touchy/spirited and if I dont' keep a close eye on her, she can get OS easily, so we try to keep all activity low key and watch her cues carefully. Also, this all started right after the MIL babysat for 6 hours.....coincidence?

My gut tells me its developmental and she is on the verge of rolling or crawling, but I just wanted to see if anyone had another idea, thanks in advance if you actually read all this!!!!

At this age, average A time is 2-2.25 hrs, and 45 minute naps usually mean that the LO is UT.  I wonder if a bit more A time might be in order?  Is she happy when she wakes?

She's always happy when she gets up, but I notice that she looks like she's tired - her eyes have bags and she is uncoordinated (okay, really she's not very coordinated to begin with, but I notice a difference). Maybe I'll try tomorrow and push her A time a bit....really, what do I have to lose?

Thanks,
Heidi

Sounds like maybe she's UT to start and ends up OT by the end of the day... I'd push the A time by 15 minutes max and see how you do.

Let me know!  :)

Just popping in to lurk a little if I may.  My DS is about the same age and we're having similar problems.  The A time is definitely the key - if I get it right we have at least one 90 minute nap a day.

BUT, last night we woke up four times :o and napping is definitely a problem today.  Argh.

(((Hugs))) to you.

Okay, so today I pushed her am A time a bit, she was up for 2 hr 10 min, and then took 15 min in bed to settle....and had a whopping 1 hour and 15 minute nap!!!!!! Knock on wood for me. Her 2nd A time she was up for almost 2 hours and she really looked tired so I put her down and it has now been 20 min and I *think* she is close to sleep....should I have pushed this A time farther? (I did give her a bath during the 2nd time, as she really needed it, but she finds them very exciting)

Of course, if today it gets better, we are going out on Xmas Eve and having people over for Christmas.....so who knows? Plus, today I noticed she is putting toys in her mouth(hasn't before) and kind of grinding her gums and has rosy cheeks. Masyn just got her last molar, I was hoping for a break before Spencer's teeth started coming ::)

Heidi, there's always something!!  ::)  Once we figure one thing out another comes along to keep us guessing.  Now that I'm a parent the only thing I know for sure is that I really don't know anything. ;D  My lifelong lesson is about relaxing and rolling with all the changes.  Not easy for my personality type!!

Anyways, if it takes 20 minutes for her to fall asleep, I think she could have done with more  A time... how long did she nap for?

oh, about 40 minutes...definatley needed more A time, I am trying to keep it low key so she doesn't get OS. My favourite quote right now is the the only thing constant is change. Not easy for me either, I love a nice routine, and we were going along so nicely something was bound to happen! Today we did 2h 5 min and I think she went right to sleep (I was in the shower, but it is right next to her room, didn't hear a peep)

Thanks for the help, I'll let you know if I am successful!

Happy Holidays,
Heidi
