Hi,
I'm interested in weaning my 6.5 month old. I have given him bottles before and he will drink a few ounces, but he has never been overly enthusiastic about it. And now, I find that breastfeeding is nearly impossible because he is so interested in everytihing but nursing- I'm worried that he has decreased my milk supply and that he is not getting enough milk. I've tried letting him hold a toy, using a patterened burp cloth over my shoulder, a nursing necklace, etc. and nothing works for more thatn 3 seconds. He's also on solids, but I know he's supposed to still have a lot of milk in his diet. Anyway, my problem is that he's also pretty distracted when he's drinking from a bottle. In the "Baby Whisperer Solves All of Your Problems" it says that letting him get hungry enough would motivate him to take the bottle. And to be prepared to ride out a hunger strike. Does this mean I should not offer solids either? Also, I'm quite convinced that doing this will increase his night waking, which has just recently improved from 6-10 wakings a night to 3 or 4. I would hate to throw that away...
I have tried to feed him a bottle in front of the tv, which has helped from time to time, but it's not working that well anymore. He usually starts trying to grab and smack the bottle (he gets excited and likes to hit things, likes his toys and books) and then the formula gets too cold for his taste and he won't have any of that. Anyhow, I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I know the distration thing is supposed to be a phase, but he's been distractible since 3 mos. and now it's gotten worse. It seems like maybe he's a bit spirited and there's no end in sight...
