2 to 1 are we doing the right thing? Thing getting worse
« on: December 30, 2008, 08:56:00 am »
Hi,

My LO is 16 month old and I have been trying to switch her to one nap a day. However now I'm not sure I am doing the right thing. She has never been a good sleeper at night and would often wake up but just lately the NW's and EW's have become much more regular and she started to refuse her pm nap. Her routine before was something like this,

6-7 Wake
9-10-30 nap
1.30-3 nap
6.30 bed

If she was over tired or sleeping without white noise she would have shorter naps.

She also would go down later at her child minders (which I have never been happy about) 2/3 days a week. Then on those days at childminders she started missing her pm nap completely around the same time as she started refusing it at home. I persisted and managed to get her off later when she was with me but at the childminders she missed this nap completely.
Just before all this happened she was ill and off her food completely so her morning bottle got earlier and earlier (so she would go back off) I think she was then waking for this from around 4.00am but we stopped the morning bottle completely and did PU/PD for over a month with no improvement on the wakings before the PM nap refusal started.

I know there was a lot going on but I decided she may need to drop a nap because nothing else seemed to stop NW/EW and when she skipped her pm nap completely she slept through.

Long history sorry.

Now she is going down at 10.15ish and only sleeping a max of 1hr15, she is sleeping though the night but very fitfully. No PM nap and bedtime of 6.00 if not earlier.

I know if I try for 2 naps again she will fight it with over an hour of PU/PD as before with no nap in the end or a short PM nap and waking in the night, help!!

Just a quick update. LO woke last night at 4 and took an hour to go back to sleep with me staying with her (If I try to leave the room started crying again). Then she slept until 7.30. That was with just an hour sleep all day yesterday and a nightmare grouchy afternoon. So we decided to go back to 2 naps because she is showing all the signs of being over tired now.

Today she went down at 9.30 and slept 10-11 then down at 1.30 until 3.00 no sleep at all.

Not sure what to do now, I am 6 months pregnant really tired and work partly from home, at the moment not getting anything done and feel awful.

She is also very spirited and touchy, not to mention stubborn, it took me months to get her in a routine in the first place and I know it will be a really battle to get her back on track.

Please help,

Tan
