Do you wake up baby to nurse?? And other questions.
« on: January 05, 2009, 03:59:29 am »
My dd is 12 wks old tomorrow. Usually she eats every 2 hrs, but lately has been 2.5-3 hrs. But today she slept really well last night and a long stretch
this morning/afternoon (8-1) she usually doesn't sleep this long so I was surprised to wake up and see how late it was (yes I love my sleep too). So she
didn't eat for quite a while during those times. So the rest of the day I was wondering if I should have woken her up every 2 hours to feed? She basically
ate every 2.5 to 3 hrs. the rest of the day. But I remember reading somewhere that if you nurse your baby less than 7 times a day, that your milk will
dry up. I can't see how this could be true because they are the ones who set the schedule right?
I was just worrying and wanted to know other's opinions.
Also should I have pumped when I woke up since it was so long? ( I single side nurse)

Thanks

As I have read you dont wake a baby during the night. Is your baby breastfed? If so I would say she is getting all that she needs during the day. Is her weight ok? Is she wetting and soiling your doctors recommended number of diapers a day?  I would also take advantage of the time and pump to store some milk up if I were you.

I Hope that helps, enjoy your long stretches of sleep!!

I've been told babies often start sleeping better during the night around 3 months of age. You are very lucky it is happening to you. I don't believe you should wake a sleeping baby. If they are hungry, they will wake for a feed. If not, enjoy it while you have it.
Your milk will adjust to your baby's needs. It will definitely not dry up. My five month old sleeps through 8 hours without a feed and my milk does not suffer. and if he's going through a growth spurt and wants to feed every two hours during the night, my supply doesn't run out.
If you want to pump you can, even if it is just a little to relieve the breast. Otherwise give your body time and it will adjust to what is hopefully a new routine for you (with extra sleep)

I'd wake (every 3 hours) to nurse during the day, but as pps have said, not at night.

Thanks for all the help. I guess I should wake her up during the day (evry 3 hrs to eat) and the long nights was a phase, now she is suffering from some
bad gas and doesn't sleep for long...I didn't think this was supposed to happen a few months into the grind! And yes I do nurse her.
