Oh FINALLY good news!!
« on: January 06, 2009, 02:40:38 am »
I think I can keep our long waited allergist appoitment!!!!

Oh Thank God, finally something good.

My sheet says to stop benadryl 3 days prior to appt.  That means today would have been the last day he could have taken it.

Unless of course he wakes up in the morning, covered in more bumps and hives...

I have confused myself now, not sure if you are able to attend the appointment or not now on Thursday. After reading this post again it sounds like you can as long as you don't need to give any benadryl tomorrow. I really hope that is the case and you don't have to give it.

We go tom. morning to the allergist.  Wish us luck.

On a good note though, the rash all over his body was from a viral infection and not the antibiotic :)

UPDATE:

After testing for about 40 different things, his poor back.  It only showed 1 thing he was allergic to and it is.................

Dust Mites.  His nasal smear showed allergy and bacteria cells in his nose.  Explains why his nose is always runny, he is always itching it and could explain his skin because he rolls around on the carpet a lot.

So now I have to either take up the carpet and get hard wood floors or buy a very expensive vacuum cleaner.  The one I have has a hepa filter, but there are better ones out there.

He is on a nasal spray once a day and a cream for his skin.

So luckily nothing major.  I think everyone is allergic to dust mites in one form or another, but this explains a lot of what is going on.

I tired to talk my DH into buying me an $1800.00 Kirby vacuum, but of course we can't.

I have removed all his curtains in his room, vacuumed really good, removed his sheets and blankets, washing in hot water.  I am going to buy just a darkening blind for his room and not worry with curtains.

Could have been worse news. Hey at least I know I can feed him anything I want now.  Still does not explain some of the reactions to some foods he has had, but they were processed foods, so It was probably a preservative or something.

:)

FAB NEWS!  I am highly allergic to dust mites as well, and I know what a pain it can be. They are everywhere! Before you spend $1800 on a vacuum ('cause keep in mind that means USING it, on EVERYTHING at least once a day!) I would do some research on other ways to keep the house mite-free.  Cleaning his mattress and airing it out should help quite a bit - keep in mind he spends 12 hours a day on it!

I know my parents invested in a good air purifier that attached to the furnace and was on 24/7 through the house, which did wonders in preventing the build up of dust mites.  But, they were in the process of building a new house at the time, so it was an easy add-on.  I don't know what the cost would be to put one in on an exisiting house.

I don't know where you live, but if you are in a colder climate where you have a forced-air heating system, your duct work will also be quite dirty and every time you turn on the heating you will be blowing air around as well. Again, will be expensive to get cleaned, but may be more effective than that $1800 vacuum, and then your current vacuum will do the trick.

There are lots of resources online about how to keep your house mite-free, I would have a good read and look for some cost effective and easy ways for the short term - then when $ is available you can see how to best invest it.

Glad that you finally have an answer!

Thanks for those suggestions.

I wondered about the air ducts also, BUT the book they sent me home with said that it is not even worth it to have the air ducts cleaned.  I was actually suprised though.

I think his mattress is fine right now because it is a crib mattress and it is plastic over the entire mattress.  THe sheets will have to be washed weekly.

I am allergic to mold and dust mites also.  Wait.. Maybe it is just mold.  My allergies have been awful.

Hopefully this daily nose spray will help and I will DEFT. look online for much more cost effective ways.

The allergist even suggested putting down those foam play mats in my living room and his bedroom.  Just not sure if it woudld be worth the investment.  Gosh, It would be about $300.00 just for my living room.

That is good news, although not the easiest thing to control. It looks like you hve some great advice though. We damp dust all surfaces which helps a little. We did change to wooden floors downstairs and that did seem to help. We also replaced James' curtains with blinds and when he went from a cot to a bed we got a water bed so we don't have issues with the mattress.
