Does soy milk have too much sugar for baby?
« on: January 09, 2009, 04:38:24 am »
DS has taken a liking to soy milk (he's been on Enfamil Soy since 5 weeks as he's lactose intolerant).

I tried giving him the soy milk and he loved it in his sippy cup.  He's 10 months old in a few days, and I've decided to put him on soy milk rather than soy formula a. because he likes it and b. because it's so much cheaper than the formula and c. because I think he's old enough for the transition.

My question is about the soy milk.  In Canada we only have So Good soy beverage, which seems to have a considerable amount of sugar in it--even the "original" (non-vanilla) flavor.  Is this okay to give him or should I be concerned about the sugar?  How much sugar is "okay"?!

Thanks.
Mel

I hope someone more knowledgable than I posts.  I would be interested in knowing as well.  I decided not to give Soy milk for that very reason.

However, I just don't use a lot of Soy products for other reasons.  Here is an article that outlines a lot of those reasons.

I do still consume soy, I just watch the intake.

Is there a Lactose Free milk you can buy that would be good for lactose intolerant?  I'm in Canada too and I believe I saw this in the normal milk section.  I know also in the Organic section of the grocery store they have soy milk in the boxes on the shelves, not in the cooler section, so there might be different varieties that may be better.

Thanks for that article, I was actually going to post and ask for that too.  I will read it when I have a minute, we're heading out the door now.

I'm on my way to the grocery store, one that has a huge organic section so will see what they have available.  I'm just not comfortable with the amount of sugar, especially considering how much milk they need still at this age.  I will look for a lactose free one, I am sure there is one I just never thought of using it.  Will check it out and get back to you.

Thanks.

Okay I found two things--a sugar free Soy milk, and I bought the Lactose free regular milk.

How do I give him the lactose milk to see if he will react?  Should I mix it with his formula or just give it to him straight up?

I would think to introduce it slowly.  I usually do an ounce a day.  Say your son drinks 6oz.  On the first day I'd do 1oz of the new milk and 5oz of the old, then next day 2oz of new and 4oz of old, etc.  This way his tummy and his taste buds can get use to it better.

Thanks!  I tried some of the Lactose free milk in his sippy and he didn't have a problem with it.  I think he drank about two ounces during supper (this was my experiment) and NO VOMITING!!! Hooray!  So....I think this means his tummy can tolerate it as usually with any milk product he vomits within 15 minutes of eating it.  I will watch tomorrow and see how his poop is--that's the next test.  He was a little bit gassy tonight I noticed but that was all.  I will try again tomorrow and will do the gradual thing in his bottles, see how he does.

You find a great variety of soy beverages here in canada, So Good, So Nice, Soy sensational and then many of the shops, like Safeway and Sobey's have their own brand.

I compared the sugar content of the So Good Original to my nephew's Homo and there was not much of a difference. The Vanilla, Strawberry and Chocolate have alot of sugar in it though.

Good luck with the Lactaid. Hope it goes well.

ETA: Homo milk has 12g sugar per 250ml and So Good Original 8g.

As long as they are eating lots of regular food it is fine, according to my Pediatric Dietitian.  But if they are not, then formula is still best.

I never would have thought there was sugar in homo milk, very interesting!!

DS does not like the soy milk that is unsweetened, he won't drink it.  He does like the lactose free milk however he has been spitting up again and I am thinking it is from the lactose free milk but am not 100% sure.

Aww poor guy!  Do you think he may be sensitive to the cow's milk protein, which is different from the lactose, and could be why he did better on soy?
