Dairy allergy or lactose intollerant - or neither?!!
« on: January 12, 2009, 06:46:54 am »
Hi :-) Thought I would ask the guru's before I head off to the Dr to be looked at with the eye roll we all know too well!! My DD is 21 months and about 6 months ago we put her on Soy milk after finding her nappies were constanting runny (not diarrhoea but sloppy) and she seemed to bring her knees to her tummy some nights. Some time after that we took her to Dr again for dry skin, itching, runny nose etc and Dr said hayfever. We had a nightmare finding an antihistimine that would work and I finally stopped them as they just make them so drowsy. Looking back now thought I wonder if it could all be dairy related?

Any advise? I'm thinking of asking for the scratch test....

Thanks!!

I would try rice milk too, since you lo is old enough, and eliminate all sources of dairy and soy for a bit to see if it helps.  The problem with doing any type of allergy test, scratch test and RAST blood test, is if she is mspi it will not show up on these tests.  MSPI does not affect the immune system, like an allergy, and cannot be tested like an allergy.  The best way to tell if it is milk and/or soy is to eliminate them from her diet for a few weeks to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks! Have never heard of MSPI so will do some looking around to find out a bit more. I tried to give her rice milk a while back when we went onto soy but she wouldn't drink it but I can definitely try it again.

Oh right, it's called milk/soy protein intolerance, or mpi (milk protein intolerance).  You could try adding it slowly to her regular milk so hopefully she won't notice a slow change?  I know it gets harder the older they get.
