He's Now On Cow's Milk
« on: January 14, 2009, 15:34:55 pm »
So he's been on cow's milk for 2 weeks now.  His eczema has come back, but not bad like it was.  We seem to be able to control it with just the steroid cream.  His attitude is fine, he seems fine in all other areas, so it looks like we don't need the Neocate anymore!  I'm happy about that!  He's even drinking the milk cold and more of it.  I think he prefers the taste of cow's milk.

Awesome, Mel! So glad things are working out for him.  I know DD grew out of her allergy and by about 18 months-ish she was onto cow's milk and did just fine.  Wonderful news for you!!  That's great!

I hope things continue ok. Just be sure to watch for other reactions apart from the eczema as it might be that it could build up in your lo's system. I do hope that is not the case though.

Yeah, I'm watching for his old symptoms to return.  Mind you the only other thing was he always had a runny nose, congestion, and was cranky/tired, besides from the eczema.  So for the last two weeks I haven't added any new foods.  Trying to wait it out and see.

Is his nose runny now?  Gosh, that sounds like Tyler, LOL.  But the allergy test say no allergy milk, just dust mites for us.

I really hope he can drink milk. What a relief for you!!!

Well, he's got eczema on his legs, feet, bum cheeks, arms, belly, lower back, and face cheeks.  However it's not as severe as it was before.  It doesn't seem to bother him and I've been putting the steroid cream on once daily now.  He does wake up with dry snots all over his face, but it isn't constant running.  I'm still on the fence about it, but I'm still watching.  It's been 3 weeks now, with him being totally on milk for 2 of those weeks.  His attitude seems fine still.  So I'm still watching to see if anything gets worse or not.

Currently his face is clear, if I use the cream, but his body still has rough bumpy spots, so we shall see!

Can I ask why you chose to switch him to cow's milk?  Just curious is all.

Well, it's all due to my allergist.  He believes that because my son's eczema wasn't a severe case, like others he's seen, and he tested negative for it on the allergy test (even though I know it won't show up on an allergy test), he said to try cow's milk.  It's been about 6 months since he was on regular type formula, so we thought we'd give it a shot.  Even though we have the prescription for the Neocate up until he is 2 years old, and he's only 17 months now.

My husband feels, and so does my allergist, if the eczema isn't that bad and doesn't affect my son's behaviour that we should put him on the cow's milk as it is "natural" whereas the Neocate isn't?

Though I like the idea of him being able to handle the milk, I know he cannot totally tolerate due to the eczema he's experiencing now, even though it currently doesn't bother him.  He does have dark circles under his eyes.  I'm assuming this is also from the milk.

What do you guys think?  Should I put him back on Neocate or just ride it out.  His poops are fine, always was on regular formula too.

I also feel that my allergist does not believe the eczema was ever caused by the formula.  He said it was a coincidence?!  He was not the one who prescribed the Neocate.  So I think he thinks my son should be on Cow's milk because the eczema was probably not caused my the milk, because his eczema was not "severe".  Severe to him is infected, pussy, eczema to the point where wraps would've been used.  I know it wasn't as bad as some babies get, but it affected my son to the point he was scratching at his face, legs, drawing blood.  Ooozing eczema, though not infected, waking several times a night out of discomfort.

I think he thinks that if I put him on cow's milk the eczema wouldn't come back, but obviously he was wrong.

Well, I'm no expert.  However I've had severe eczema (just like he described) and it started off as mild :-\.  I'd be cautious if I were you, that's all.  I don't think it's coincidence that it cleared it up, especially because it came back again with the introduction of cow's milk.  To me that's an obvious sign of an irritant.

I'd probably just keep a close eye on him like you're doing, and if the eczema gets any worse or you see any other symptoms, I'd switch back to the Neocate asap.  At least you have ~6 months of your prescription left and if it's going to get worse from the cow's milk, it will probably happen in that time.

Eczema is so yucky.  It took me years and years and many doses of prednesone before I found out what was causing mine (which happened to be powdered laundry detergent of all things?!).  From having eczema, I wouldn't even want a mild case back.  It's soo itchy and sometimes sore.

You are his mom, you know what's best.  Follow your gut and just keep your eye on him.  You will know if it's time to switch back.

And--I don't think giving milk intended for baby cows to humans is any more "natural" than drinking something else.  But that's just my opinion!   ;)

Anyway, I hope he continues to not get any worse and if anything, better!  :D

Hehe yeah.  Even I get eczema, right below my hairline on my neck.  Every once and a while I get it, not sure why, but it itches like a son of a gun.  I steal my son's steroid cream when I need it lol.

I'm definitely keeping a close eye on him.  The thing I liked about the Neocate was all the great nutrients in it.  I was getting away with putting his steroid cream on once every two days, but I started doing it once every day.  Seems to be growing, but I'll see what happens this week.

If it was my ds I think I would put him back on neocate. I know how much my son has suffered and I would not take the chance of the eczema getting worse. I know you say it is only mild at the moment but I think if you are having to use a topical steroid daily then it sounds like it is getting worse. It is difficult though as I would love to be able to give James dairy.
