Turkey intollerance???
« on: January 15, 2009, 19:51:14 pm »
Ok, I thought turkey was on the list of foods that are to be less likely to cause issues.  Our lo woke screaming over/over after thanksgiving.  On Mon. he did the same thing.  I think it is related to turkey.  He had them both of the days I am mentioning.  He also has reflux, so I think the babyfood jars with turkey may have a little amt or I might have missed this as he was waking TONS from what I thought was reflux.

Is there anything else that I should be concerned about?  I saw the pedi today, and she thought it sounded like an intollerance.  I am now questioning his reflux and the nice rash he has had on his cheeks for months.  Pedi has said she thought kp.

Any thoughts?  Just avoid turkey, or should I do some more searching?

Do you have any pics of the rash on his face?   With intolerances it could be any food really, even if it seems pretty safe.  I know Wendy, the moderator here, is intolerant to potatoes.   How long has he had the rash on his face?

Hi Melanie!  I have posted and chatted with Wendy about it being kp on her kp thread.  Just discovered this turkey issue.  I should post some more photos.  I will look through tonight to see if I already have some that show it.

Thanks for the post!!!!  Be back later!

I think he has had the rash since the beginning of this past summer.  Long time....  There may be better pics on my camera; I am not a techie, so dh usually does all the uploading.  If I find others, I will post them.  Otherwise, this is one I found that is from Christmas.

I should note that it is getting worse on his arms; it also is spreading up towards/over the bridge of his nose.  (Just the bumps, not the redness.)  These were taken toward midmorning; it gets redder/bumpier as the day goes on.  Been using aquafor for some time, now.  Seems to help a little, but it never goes away.

Thanks!

Yeah, hard to tell in the pics as they don't really enlarge, poor guy.  Cute curls though!  If it is a Turkey intolerance at least it would be easy to avoid right?  Then maybe try again later.

I know with my son's eczema it's patchy all over his legs, not uniform at all.  Not really sure as I don't know much about KP.  Hopefully someone else will be able to offer some advice.

Hey Jean!  Sorry I have not been around for a while.  I was really sick and kinda feel off the face of the earth for a while (lots better now though).

GREAT pics.  That looks just like Tyler's.  I do have great news though with his, it is almost gone.  His legs are bump free and his face is actually smooth and looks so nice.

Have you thought about enviromental allergies at all?
We had Tyler's allergist appt. and he is only allergic to dust mites (pretty bad).  There are some foods that he still reacts to, but it is mostly processed things.

So what kind of turkey did Heath have at Thanksgiving?  How was it cooked?

How old is he again?  What is he drinking now?
Sorry I am brain dead and can't remember a thing.

The allergist gave us a nice cream for Tyler's face and I use aquaphor everynight.  I also run a humidifier in his room.

Any other foods he reacts too?

Hi Wendy!  Sorry to hear you haven't felt well :-(  Hope you are getting better!

First of all, TERRIFIC it is nearly gone for Tyler!  Just using the cream from the allergist, aquafor, and being careful about dustmites is doing the trick?  We have an air cleaner that is running 24/7 in his room.

Perhaps it is environmental.  We just cannot shake it.  It will look a little better in the morning, and by evening it is back to the same old.  His arms are getting worse, as it has spread further down towards his hands.

We haven't gone to an allergist; our pedi just thinks it is kp.  I'm not sure.  I guess the only place to start may be there.

I really don't know what kind of a turkey it was on Thanksgiving.  I am terrible with meat, as I am a veggie myself.  As for the turkey he had just recently, it was from a natural food store.  Antibio and etc free; it had the least amt of other things in the ingredients.  Boy, was his gas bad both times.  We actually called the phone nurse it was so bad at Thanksgiving.  He started a cold the same after Thanksgiving, so hard to tell if there were any resiratory issues that were related.  He also started a cold with this go around, too.

He is drinking milk/alimentum.  He has a number of wakings in the pm after going to sleep.  We thought lovey related, but perhaps he is waking and then trying to find them to get back to sleep.  Two nights ago, I did only oatmeal/banana.  No wakings early.  Last night I tried the same thing, and it was the usual.  So, I started to think maybe there were other foods that are maybe causing reflux or allergy issues.  He used to do terribly with tomatoes, but have added them back here and there.  Seemed per usual with the small wakings in the evening; like I said, they are regular.

I could try the humidier again; it was so hot in there last time.  Of course we used it full blast, lol.  So, turing it way down may help.

Thanks again gals!

Before I ruled out turkey, I would make sure it was not another ingredient.  Was it packaged, already made, just heat and serve type OR did you prepare the turkey yourself and only used salt/pepper, etc.

I would either try an allergist or a dermatalogist.

Our Derm. doctor said Tyler did have KP, but over top of that, it was really inflamed and red and that is not typical with KP.  KP normally just looks like goose bumps.

I think you feel in your gut it is not KP.  I would not setttle just for that answer.

Yes, Some how Tyler's is almost 100% gone now.  BUT now we are dealing with extremely dry chapped red cheeks.  Looking back this happened the same time last year.  I thought it was food related, but it is more weather related.

Wooo You should see his cheeks.  They are the color of a bright red apple.

Off to bed.
